Having major problems with my new Onkyo TX-SR805.

Okay... I just purchased a new surround sound system, and at it's core is the Onkyo TX-SR805 receiver. I also bought a Velodyne DPS12 sub, Monitor 60 front speakers, Monitor 40 surround speakers, and the CR2 center speaker from Polk audio. I am using my brand new Sony 46XBR5 Tv to watch movies and play games. Here are the problems I am coming across. I can watch the movies via HDMI through the receiver, but I don't hear any sound from the surround sound. I mean, if I turn it up really loud I can begin to hear the back right speaker and the sub makes a little noise, but if I keep turning it up the receiver just cuts off. The receiver has been cutting off quite a bit actually. I don't understand why only one of the speakers is working, and not the other 4. I can watch the movie just fine with the tv speakers even if I am running the HDMI through the receiver, just no surround sound. Does anyone know why I am having this problem? Is my receiver too weak to support the speakers that I have? I really don't think this is the problem. I'm not very technically inclined, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

Ok, I just to get it working again, and this time I heard noise coming from the front two speakers, but the receiver cuts off right when it starts to get loud. I don't know what in the world is causing this. I can't stand how I know that it all works, yet I don't know how to set it up. Any help as to why my receiver keeps shutting down and why I can't hear my speakers is greatly appreciated.

not to seem condescending, did you read the manual all the way thru before you started? Id start over. Just a note when you say your not hearing the surround, your not explaining the source your using, and unless its multi-ch audio, surround is for effects and would be more audiable in dd, dts...ect Also you should list all circumstances surrounding what your trying to explain

good luck

It sounds very much like a short causing the receiver to go into protection mode. The first thing to do is to double check that there are no stray strands of speaker wire touching each other or the metal chassis of the receiver; same on the speaker end. You should also visually check for any breaks in the speaker wire.

I can watch the movie just fine with the tv speakers even if I am running the HDMI through the receiver, just no surround sound.

Can you elaborate on how the source devices are connected to the receiver and the receiver to the TV? If you are hearing sound from the TV speakers when the receiver is connected to the TV via HDMI then you must have the HDMI Monitor Out setting on when it should be off.

When playing a movie that doesn't produce any surround sound what does the display say for audio format? [Press the display button on the receiver or remote].

troubleshooting

Polk monitor 60 speakers are 8 ohms with 90 dB efficiency ( wich is about average) so they should work well with your Onkyo. The Monitor 40s are about the same 8 ohms with 89 dB effiiciency.

I would go back and recheck all of your speaker conenctions and make sure you don't have a whisker hair short. If all of your connections look good you might want to try disconencting your speakers and add them back one at a time.

You guys are probably right. I did a piss poor job of connecting the speakers. This is my first time connecting an entertainment system, and I think that a lot of the speaker wire isn't connected properly. Do you guys have any advice as to how I should go about cutting the wire and connecting the speakers? I bought 12 gauge Monster speaker wire from Best Buy, and when I was cutting it I always seemed to cut into some of the wire. What exactly would cause the receiver to cut out? Where does the wire have to physically touch in order for it to make the receiver short out like that? I am hooking my PS3 up via HDMI to the receiver input slot, and then I am running an HDMI cord out to the TV. I believe that the HDMI out setting on the receiver is turned to on, but only because if it is set to off I don't see the picture. As far as what source I am watching the movie in (dts, dd, etc), I'm not really watching it in any of these. I can hardly even hear anything. I can faintly hear sound in the front left speaker, and the back right. I turned the Velodyne sub off because it would start to make noise, and then the receiver would shut off immediately. I really do appreciate the responses guys. Sorry if my posts are confusing. It seems as though my english is slacking. Anyways, I'm hoping to get this issue resolved sooner than later. I'm hitting the hay, but I will be back tomorrow to try and fix this problem.

On your PS3 .... And to setup Onkyo

On you Onkyo 805 manual. (you can download online at : http://63.148.251.135/redirect_service.cfm?type=own_manuals&file=TX-SR805_875_B_En.pdf

Did you use Audessey to setup up spkears. Usually it will detect a short and display "speaker error" - page 58.

Make sure you have the PS3 set for the HDMI in the "setup" menu.

On your Onkyo the 805 supports HDMI 1.3 repeater mode so it should pass through audio and video.

On the front of your 805 what speaker lights light up, FL,CFR, SL, LFE,SR,SBL,SB, SBR? To obtain surround the SL, SR should light up and optionally SBL,SB, SBR.

If your source does not have surround sound then you need to set it on your receiver.

page 28, 46 - set HDMI monitor = Yes

On page 76 what listening mode are you using? Dolby pro Logix IIX or DTS neo06 or Nueral THX 5.1/7.1 will expand 2 channel input to a surround mode.

If you look at page 77 under THX, the surround sound output is dependent upon the source material.

You might also test with "Full Mono" and "All Ch Stereo"

P.S.- Your English is fine, don't worry about it ;)

Alright, this is starting to drive me crazy. I get home today, and the first thing that I do is start to redo all of the wiring. As I am pulling out my receiver one of the tips of my HDMI cable comes apart. I had to take it back up to tweeter to get a new one. Once I get home I plug everything into the receiver and........... it works!!!!!! It was mainly the faulty wiring, but that's not the problem anymore. Now I can't get the screen to come up. The picture from my PS3 was coming through on my television just fine yesterday, but now that the speakers are working I can't get a picture to come up. I thought that maybe it was the HDMI cable that wasn't working (seeing as though I just screwed up my other one), but when I switched the cables I could still hear the sound coming through on my speakers, so the cord is still working. I have the setting on my receiver to allow for the HDMI Monitor to allow outgoing signals. In other words it is set to yes. I've played around with this thing forever and I still can't seem to get a picture up. I can hear the beginning of the movie, but no pic. Anyone got any ideas? You guys were right with the faulty wiring. Thanks ahead of time for the help.

Alright, so I just unplugged the HDMI cable from my HDMI out slot and plugged it directly into the PS3. The picture on the tv popped right up, so I know its not the cords. On the front of my Onkyo it says that I am in Game/Tv with PLIIX Game right underneath it. I have the HDMI setup going through the 3rd slot, and the Game/TV is setup to broadcast HDMI out through it. I don't know what else I am doing wrong. Right above the G in Game there is PCM. What PCM means is beyond me. Can anyone fix this problem for me???

I actually had this problem with my Onkyo receiver when I first got it. After about half volume, the amp shuts off by it self and the standby light flashes. It turns out that my surround left had the negative and positive wire touching. As soon as i corrected this problem, I could turn it up as loud as I want.

As far as your speaker problem is concerned, I am not too sure. The other audio guys here are very knowledgeable and will probably help you out a lot more.

I'm not having problems with the speakers anymore. Now I can't get a picture to show up when I have the HDMI out set to Yes. I don't know why in the world this is happening. It was working just fine before yesterday, but as soon as I got the speakers working, the picture stopped working. Any suggestions?

I can hear the sound coming through the surround sound just fine, but I can't see the picture on my screen. Did you do the HDMI input assignment on page 48?
Is the TV on the right input?

It works now.

I found out that the HDMI output in the back has a small break, but it still works if I angle the cord right. Everything is working now, but I still need to configure the system to make it sound most ample. Anyone have any suggestions?
