Has anyone seen the new Sony speakers??

I was in best buy yesterday and saw a Sony Blue-Ray player / amp, that does 5.1. Proprietary of course, because I just wanted the speakers. The model is a BDV-IS1000. The sound from them was really nice, but the $1000 price tag, pushed me away!

Look at the size of those little thingies. I've seen bigger tweeters.
I did not found the specs on those sats, but the subwoofer had this little information:
Cutoff Frequency : 800Hz

The "sub" (better call it the woofer) is reproducing all content bellow 800Hz, making it "visible". If you put the sub on the corner, too much sound will come from the corner. The only place for it would be between the front cubes.

Unless you just want to put those things in display (because you like how they look), do not waste time with them.

They sound very very nice. I was impressed, and it takes alot to do this... Everything is powered by the AMP including the sub. I don't want the system, I just wanted the cute speakers. But Sony does not sell them ala-cart. :(

That's because those speakers are worthless unless you use a woofer like the one used in that system. You couldn't pair those speakers with any good subwoofer seamlessly. There would be a gap of several hundred hertz, and I am sure their power handling is astoundingly low and would require a special cross-over to use with a regular receiver to avoid blowing them up it less than modest levels of output.

They've had those "golf ball sized speakers"(do a google search for that and see what you find.:D) available for around a year now.

Those golf ball sized speakers are something else that's for sure. They come close to making bose cubes sound good:eek::eek:... I can't believe I just wrote that but it's true. If they could get down to 800hz, I would be amazed, I'm sure that even if that "sub" gets to 800hz there's still a gap between that and the sats. They are a cute little display piece but not worth the time.

If you want something really small and "cute" buy some Gallo's. Those speakers look good, and sound good. For really small satellites, if you team them up with a good sub and calibrate them properly they sound fairly decent.

I 2nd gregp2 opinion. Look at Orb and forget that paper mache mess of Sony. You'll soon tire of them.

A KEF 1000 series would blow those out of the water and they are like 500 for a full set.

A KEF 2000 series would be another class

and a 3000 series is probably the best satellites i've heard.

Kef has been using Coaxial drivers for a while so they are able to make better small speakers than many others.

OK, I have three theories:

1. Someone in the Sony factory broke the headband off some headphones, and said “hey, these would make cool speakers, eh?”

2. Someone at Sony said “I wonder if we could put tweeters in tiny enclosures, and market them as a home theater system

3. Someone at Sony said “Well, if the Bose boys can market crap & make money, why can’t we?!”

4. Most people won't really notice if we do this.
5. The wifes are going to love the small size.

I think they require quad-wiring with 8 gauge liquid nitrogen cooled 24k gold terminated with audio inducting alloys to perform their best.

SO then they have a special box that you run the quad 8 gauge speaker wires to that then hooks to the speakers with 22 gauge wires... That's perfect. :D:D

Actually, you need to see and hear them before making a comment like this. I'm pretty picky when it comes to speakers, and this set sounded pretty good. I'm not a fan of bose either, but you can crank them and it does not sound distorted one bit. I was truly impressed on the size and the quality of audio coming from them.

But you wouldn't want to hit those cubes with a golf club. Listen and play golf at the same time. Just don't hit them in the water.
