I have not seen any posts about it on here,
Was wondering if anyone has done any comparing? Is it gimmicks or is it something to desire?

Yep, not sure when this was written, but it states it has the 70mm pj. Alamo draft house in Austin has one too, but I don't think it's the same is IMAX.

Through IMAX technology, your senses are almost overwhelmed by sight and sound. The larger-than-life IMAX Experience brings reality to life on a screen over six stories high. With 12,000 watts of floor shaking digital surround sound, you’ll feel like you’re there.
IMAX FACTS
  • The screen is 4500 times bigger than an average TV screen.
  • The film is strong enough to pull a truck.
  • Light from the 15,000-watt lamp in an IMAX® projector is so bright that if it were on the moon we could see it from earth with the naked eye.
  • The l5/70 film frame used by the IMAX projection system is 10 times the size of a conventional 35mm frame.
  • Sonics Proportional Point Source™ (PPS) loudspeaker system was specifically designed for IMAX theatres. The system typically uses 44 laser focused speaker drivers located throughout the theater to fully envelope the audience.

The article is from 2016. Yes, the real Imax uses 70mm wide film. 15k watt Imax light source was mentioned.
It's the same IMAX.

"To this day, IMAX’s 2D 15 perf (perforation) camera from 1976 remains the highest-resolution camera in the world — far better than any digital camera. "

Either they mean "production film camera" or they are talking out their butt.

The sensor on the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope is 3,200 MP. I'm not sure it's going to win against large-format and scientific-use still cameras either.

Me being pedantic aside: that's a good/useful article.

In the context of the article, I am sure the author scope was limited to video production cinematic equipment.
Scientific measuring instruments normally far exceed the capabilities of both consumer and professional grade equipment.

To be clear on the completely off-topic conversation of IMAX theaters...

Some of the best IMAX theaters out there are going away from 70mm film to use front projection. The National Air & Space Museum near me was one of the first to make this change. I don't look at it as a bad thing as they really do all their work at the highest levels of quality.

The bigger shame is that there is no assigned seating at the theater and you when they run major market films they are almost always sold out well in advance with a LONG line to get in.

Most theaters no longer project film prints. My local Imax theater is strictly digital.
That's the tricky part. Finding one that still does. I know some still do (they advertise it) but that isn't specific to IMAX
