Hi there,
Hoping this is the right part of the forum. I know a little bit about amps and that but not lots. My uncles got a problem with his Harman/Kardon HS 500 DVD player/amp/surround sound system. Probably 2-3 years old.
He says it used to always work fine (it was hard to work out from him when these problems started happening). Now the sub just doesn't work. From what I can tell the sub looks active as it turns on like my active monitor speakers. Tried setting volume higher, turning on and off the filter and every other switch on the back. Still nothing coming out the sub (the "satellites" as i believe they're called are playing music this whole time).
Now the sub has 2 inputs. One that looks like a phono cable but much more beefy, and another one thats like a 3.5mm jack called the "trigger" (assume its some sort of power saving function?).
Now the other problem (ignoring the sub) is that after 15 minutes or so, the sound starts to break up and then you can't hear anything. Theres no heatsink sticking out the back of this device and I can't see a fan........ not sure how it cools but I assume its a heating problem? I fix laptops all the time so I'm tempted to take it to pieces and blow it out with some compressed air. Does it have temperature sensors on it that I can check in the setup?
Wierdest thing is.... (credit to my uncle for working this out). When the satellites stop working after 15-20 minutes, unplugging the sub trigger cable slightly makes the satellites stop working again. Yet unplugging the trigger cable or plugging it fully back cause the satellites to stop again. Really not sure why this is. But even with this "trick" apparently the satellites stop working after another 15-20 minutes.
Any suggestions or pointers or tricks would be much appreciated! Hopefully I can get this working or is this some common fault and its going in the bin?
