Harman Kardon Digital Path Receivers

Has anyone listened to the Harman Kardon DPR1001? It is smaller than their other models. It supposedly runs cooler by using a "completely digital path".
Thanks

I actually just picked up an open box on Sunday. It was the cheapest HK digital receiver available, and I was looking for a new receiver to go into a cabinet in our main living area so I was hoping to find something that would run cooler. I have it hooked up, haven't watched any movies but have tried stereo music thru the coaxial connection. The power seems more than adequate at least for stereo, and it does run cooler. Upon first testing the sound was absolutely horrible, very distorted above -40db. I reset the device and it was fine. However, upon further testing i got a "crackling" type sound out of my speakers when turning the volume past -25db when listening to music in stereo mode. It did it a few times on difference cds. Since this was HK's first digital receiver I've heard it has issues with complex speakers that are more than 2 way. My mains are 3 way, so this may be true. The sound is a little bit different then their analog receivers, but still seemed good to me. I have heard there have been quite a few improvements with their newer digital receivers, the DPR 1005 and 2005. They can be found for as low as $750 and $900 if you can stretch your budget. Unfortunately this receiver will be going back and I am going to get an HK analog amp, the AVR 235, it is cheaper than the 1001 but has the same power and a few newer features. I guess I will end up having to deal with the heat later if it gets to be too much.

You will find that currently at least, "digital" amplifiers have an inferior sound quality to conventional designs. Most of them are included in the Home Theater In a Box thingys. They use them because they are physically smaller, and (I'm guessing here) cheaper to build. I saw an article on them in S&V a year or so ago, where they had one with a $5 bill as a backdrop. The thing was 1/2 the size of the bill, and rated at 500w.
