Harman Kardon crossovers??

To this day I'm still not sure about the built in crossovers in my AVR140.

The owners manual states to set them at the lowest frequency that the speakers are rated for. Eg: If the speakers lowest frequency is 75HZ, then set the crossover to 80HZ in the AVR140. O.K. fine.

My question is, with my two L&R main speakers set to "large", are the frequencies below 80HZ still being sent to the sub only or are frequencies below 80HZ being sent to the sub and two main speakers also?

Hope this makes sense.

The highlighted portion is correct.
Unless your speakers are capable of playing frequencies down to 20Hz you should have them set to 'small'.

Thanks for the reply.

My speakers are bookshelf rated down to 75HZ and it would make sense to have them set to "small" but I have them set to "large". To me they're fuller sounding that way. Why would that be or am I hearing things?

So long as the things you're hearing make you happy ... :)

You're also accustomed to hearing that now and different would sound wrong according to some. Your sub choice, placement and calibration would affect the end result of how those lower frequencies sound.

Just out of curiosity, what speakers and sub do you use and what have you done to level match their output?

I'm using a Mirage Omni S10 sub along with Soundstage bookshelfs with a 6.5" speaker for left, right and rear surrounds and a Soundstage center with two 5". This is supposedly a brand made by JBL for Visions Electronics here in Canada.

I use a SPL meter to try and match output but now that you mention it, I should maybe go back and recalibrate with a "small" setting and see what it sounds like. It's likely out of whack with me playing around with it over a period of time.

Try to give it a month with the new 'correct' settings to let your ears 'break in' but you very well may just like it the way you like it. It certainly sounds like you have a handle on the calibration thing with the SPL meter. You might try running your sub 3db hot.

BTW, way back when, I had to have the same question answered about my H/K AVR 430's crossover with the mains set to large.

So I set all my speakers to "small", re-calibrated and then turned the sub up. Now the sub is doing the work instead of the other speakers. Yup, it does sound cleaner and the sub sounds much better.:) I think the mistake I made was not turning up the sub when I tried the small setting before. Duh!

Kind of a no brainer. I should have done this a long time ago:eek:

I'm happy.:)
