Harman Kardon Confusion - Help!

Hello there,

So I am buying a new receiver for the HDMI stuff. Having been extremely happy with my HK AVR70 (yes 1996) for its sweet, sweet sound, I would most probably go for another HK.

Since I am in Pakistan, we don't have the proper official stores like you people do, rather shops that can get us anything we want right up to the highest-end stuff. However, specific models may not be available for a demo.

I am planning to get me:

Klipsch RB 81 or 61 bookshelf for front
Klipsch centre
Klipsch Quintet for surround and of course a sub

The purpose is for movies and music (.flac through my macbook pro toslink optical out), mainly Pink Floyd and the likes. I also have a WDTV allowing HD content straight from an external hard drive plus getting a BD player too.

Now, what I am confused about is the model number hierarchy of HK. Some are 3 digits and some 4 e.g. AVR 345 and AVR3600. There seems to be little difference between the two when you compare them on HK's website.

In cars or other brands it is quite simple, Mercedes Benz E240 is one thing, C200 another and S600 is the top of the line.

The guy at the shop here is urging me to go for Onkyo or Denon (perhaps because of the stacks of those two brands I saw at his shop) which is a little confusing. This is secondary though. The primary help needed is the model numbers confusion.

Stay happy!

Shahab.

So how does it work with HK?

Hey Ares, thanks for the reply!

So I gather the AVR354 will be for the best buy/having it for the sake of it lot and the AVR3600 would be for dedicated users?

Thanks again!

I just purchased the Harman Kardon AVR 1600.. It has the video processing i need and at 50 watts @ 35 amps is more then enough power.. The AVR 3600, Is the top of HK receivers..Everything is high end, even has dolby volume.. 110 watts per channel i may add..It converts, any audio signal, analog , or tv into dolby sound.. I payed, $813 with taxes for my reciever with 5 yr warranty.. Depending how much you want to spend will depend on the qaulity receiver you will choose.. My HK AVR-1600 is top 3 of HK Recievers of 2009.. Hope this helps..

Thank you Greddy87. I might get the 3600 or as I said the 3550 HD. Have you checked any of the two 3550 or the 7550? Price is a different thing here in Pakistan with all the freight charges, customs, taxes and stuff but I'd say $1500 for the receiver?

Thanks again.

No problem Shahab.. I just checked the 3550hd and the 7550hd.. i think the reason why i didnt check these both was because its more then enough.. Even the AVR 1600 is still over the top for me.. 3550hd 75 watts @ 35 amps, while 7550hd is at 110 watts @ 35 amps.. Again difference between the both, are qaulity and power..higher decoders and video processors.. Either way, whatever one you choose.. Im sure you will enjoy it..:)

Well, that is a 50 watt receiver not at 35 amps, no such thing in amps. That amp rating is elusive to what the company really means and under what specific conditions.

So I went to demo the Klipsch RB-81 bookshelf speakers since the guy was hell bent on convincing me that HK no longer made as good receivers as the AVR70. I thought I would at least give the speakers a try. What a disappointment! What a disappointment! I had spent hours doing homework and had decided on them but I couldn't believe how disappointing the sound was. Here is what happened:

1. They plugged them with a Marantz 5003 and a JVC BD player.

2. Played Eagles Hell Freezes Over.

I was expecting exceptional vocals. Full marks on that albeit a little too harsh on the ears. But with all due respect, most computer speakers have more bass. The size and weight of those speakers I was waiting for the room to shake but boy I thought something was wrong with the drivers or they weren't even playing and the only sound was from the tweeters.

Anyway, they plug in an Onkyo 875 and change the bluray to some Celine Dion (Can't stand her). Again, the vocals were out of this world and again a little painful on the ears but no bass nothing whatsoever!

Apologies to fans of Klipsch here but back in my hometown I got some of my late father's speakers, a pair of Sony from the 70's (with wooden arches like grills) and a pair of Technics from the 80's. I won't count the Sony on the higher notes but bass wise, the RB-81s sound like the speakers on my MacBook Pro compared to those speakers. And here is the price for the Klipsch pair... around 900 US Dollars!

Still thinking something was wrong, I plug in my MacBook Pro through a TosLink and play Pink Floyd PULSE Live (.flac). This time around they add a Klipsch Sub-12 to the equation. That monster shakes the place but music wise, it was rumbling.

At this point I would like to share some history with you all.

I started listening through headphones when I was two years old. While in diapers I knew how to turn on the Tascam deck, play, rewind etc. my parents say.

Recently, thanks to the fact that there's a production house as one of our group companies, I have been listening to uncompressed music on Genelec Monitors whenever I can so to some extent, I know by heart the instruments played in PULSE Live and some of the other songs I tried on those speakers. I am by no means ANY expert AT ALL. NO! and NO I don't know all that much just sharing what I experienced.

So I am back to square one. A friend has gone to Dubai for a meeting and I have asked him to check out the Harman Kardon AVR3600 and the 7550HD. I have had the AVR70 for ages now and after listening to the Marantz and the Onkyo I have started to love the old 70 even more. If only it had HDMI and an optical input!

At the risk of being accused of blasphemy, I would add that the Bose Accoustimass 3 sounds better. If the satellites sound tinny, they don't weigh as much and are not as big as much as the RB-81s that sadly sound tinnier.

Any guidance or tips would be helpful.

Stay happy!

Shahab.

The company makes modest ratings.. 2ndly thats what the company put on for rating.. Its a high current amp..
