If you are looking to run a stereo receiver with clean good sounding power at a very reasonable price point, the Harman Kardon 3490 is the route you want to take.

I'm pushing several speakers (4 pair) and sound coming from this receiver is incredible, night and day compared to the quality I had prior. 120w per channel is a force to be reckoned with.

The receiver is good looking, minimal fluff and a great core control set such as BASS, TREBLE and BALANCE. Also it boasts Quality inputs like optical and coaxial.

If you are an iPOD owner, you will be happy to have complete control and charging with the "not included" Bridge II Docking Station.

The remote is second rate, but I use programmable URC remotes, so I'm not going to write a lot about the remote except to say that it's only useful if you have LOTS of HK equipment.

If you're looking for HDMI, you're looking in the wrong place as the 3490 is more for your music than your video.

Back to the music, if I had to use one word to describe the music, it would be BRIGHT... I think I would slip in the work CLEAR also. I have read that some feel the bass could be a little deeper, I think it's a division issue, if you use a sub with your setup, you are able to create the most pure thick sounding bass and allow your speakers to do their job of providing highs and mids.

Bottom line, I will not need to brag about this receiver to my friends, they will hear the quality and pure sound this receiver provides and the proof will be in the pudding.

Harman Kardon 3490 seems a decent piece of audio equipment but after the 3500$ lexiCONNED Oppo incident I decided I'll never buy anything from them... My 2c

Stereo receivers haven't really changed much over the years, other than appearance really. H/K has always made good ones :)

The 'Optical In' DAC is definitely a nice touch too. I use it on the 'Optical Out' of an Airport Express which allows me to stream the highest resolution digital files from anywhere in the house. It's great.

What speakers exactly are you using?
In the Main Room I'm running in wall I'm running a pair of in wall SP8II's, Master Bedroom I'm running a pair of ERS110DT speakers in series making them 4 ohms. I'm running a pair of the ERS110DT speakers in the Gameroom as well, then a pair of outdoor speakers on the patio, the AR250 by Proficient.

This is a good receiver, with a robust amp section. One complaint about it I had was that, despite there being two sub-outs, there was no bass management. This thing had no internal crossover, it just sends the full signal to your sub. I don't really care too much since I can just use the crossovers on my sub, but I had to get a high pass filter for my speakers since they are being fed the full signal as well! I don't think it was unreasonable to expect a stereo receiver to use crossovers to separate bass for subs nowadays. Anyway, aside from that, I have found it to be a excellent receiver.

Pretty much all stereo receivers and integrated amps that I've seen are like that except for the Outlaw RR2150.

h/k actually invented the receiver, and introduced wide bandwidth, low negative feedback, and low T.I.M. distortion. They have a superior product, IMO.

Their amp sections are good and they are reliable. Still it's not the best receiver brand I've owned.
