We're having a Halloween party weekend after next, costumes, spooky decorations, large amounts of booze, and I need to program some music.
I'm going to set a Slacker favorites folder and let run during the party so nobody has to dj or flip disc's. I'm wanting to get some idea's for some music to program to add to the spooky vibe. Some of the songs I already selected are
Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead
Cure - A forest, Charlotte sometimes, Funeral party, Night like this
TV on the Radio - Wolf Like me
BOC - Don't fear the reaper
Warren Zevon - Werewolves of london
Ozzy - Bark at the moon
Rob Zombies - Boogeyman, Dragula, living dead girl, superbeast
The Specials - Ghost town
MJ - Thriller
Marilyn Manson - Beautiful people, sweet dreams
Oingo Boingo - Dead mans party, No one lives forever
Eagles - Hotel California
Doors - People are strange
Misfits - Astro Zombies, I turned into a martian, Teenagers from mars, Night of the living dead.....
the Damned - Grimly fiendish, Shadow of love
Dangerous toys - Scared
Bolshoi - a way (the video seemed spooky to me when i was a kid)

Ok, you get the drift, give me some input. Thanx.

Aside from novelty tunes like 'The Monster Mash', I tend to think of some of the 80's tunes for Halloween parties. So I am thinking stuff like:
Animotion- Obsession
DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince- A Nightmare on my Street
the Ghostbuster's theme from Ray Parker Jr
Oingo Boingo - Weird Science
Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me
....
There's a ton more like that, but that's all I can think of right now, I'll list more if I can remember the titles and artists

Just thought of a few more:
Depeche Mode- Fly on the Windscreen
Inxs- The Devil Inside
The Cure- Lullaby

lol now you got me digging through my music collection, but I found a couple good halloweenesque 80's tunes:
Dirty Sanchez- Really Rich Italian Satanists
Sisters of Mercy- Cry Little Sister

I found a list on the internet from someone who is thinking along the same lines as I am. A lot of good tunes in there, and a lot that isn't ringing a bell for me as well. I'll have to look some of these up.

That was part of my problem that almost all the songs I was coming up with were 80's song, and I was trying to avoid that. Part of my issue is that a lot of these 80's tunes were more visual to me than the music is now. Blame it on being from the original MTV generation or the simple story telling lyrics of a lot of those songs, I'm not sure. Maybe I turned into my parents, but today's mainstream music escapes me. Although, I love alternative. For instance, Lullaby by the Cure (great song by the way). As soon as I saw that song title, I thought of that line "The spiderman man is having me for dinner tonight". You can't paint a more visual picture than that! Alice Cooper is also another cool visual guy. In fact, when I saw him in concert years ago he had props for almost every song. The good thing most of the people that will be attending will be in their 30's and 40's, so the older tunes may not be such a bad thing.

I don't know of any current pop tunes that are 'dark' like some of these 80's tracks. I'm sure they exist, but I don't think they get the kind of wide exposure that pop music had back in the 80's. Somehow it seems like it was easier to hear dark pop music back then, when you could have big hits from The Cure, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshee, etc. I'll admit to not paying attention to pop music for a couple decades now, so I could be completely wrong. On the other hand, Dubstep is getting pretty popular, and there are a lot of dark twisted dubstep tunes out there.

By the way, Pandora has at 2 or 3 stations of halloween music. . . . That's easier than coming up with your own playlist.
