I've found some good prices on a few Hakko soldering stations and heard they are excellent. I'm wondering if anyone here has used one before.;)

I've never used one, but, wow, that looks pretty nice. I hate my stand, feels like it is going to topple over all the time. Looks like the heat is widely adjustable on there too.

I use a Hakko desoldering system. It is beautifully made, and the only nit I fond that actually worked and got old components really clean.

Well I'm picking up a Hakko 928 locally it's got 2 temperature controls so I can use dual irons. An upgrade from the Rat Shack one I currently have. It should help me in building the active crossovers and amps. A good engineer needs to good at soldering IMO. So this will be my tool to improve my skills in that area.

Hakko are good but only a runner up to industry standard - Weller
But both are huge upgrades over RS crap

I've heard some other brand was better than both(EEs and their preferences:p), but every engineer knows that good enough is what counts. This is why I drive a Mazda rather than a BMW. ;)

I just hope this guy is selling it for the right reasons.:( Given the cost it's well worth the risk though.

Hakko's are nice units. I've used either them or Wellers all of my life it seems. I got my first iron, a Weller, when I was about 8 and my current iron is a Weller but I used Hakkos at work for a long time and had no issue with either. I've also used a couple of Goots and found them good too.

should check out circuit specialist, a lot of their irons are either hakko clones or made by hakko, i've had mine for 6 years, thing works awesome.

I know it's been a long time since I posted this, but I must say this soldering iron is simply amazing. The stand is fantastic and will not fall over. The iron even in a clearly well used state does a fantastic job flowing solder. The temperature control is fantastic and lets me get just the right amount of heat. Changing tips is a breeze too. If you see an old Hakko 928 on craigslist and need an iron it's definitely worth the pickup. Way better than the RS one for my needs.

I have had a Hakko from 93 to 2002 (sold it to a friend). Bullet proof and great thermal recovery.

+1, I've had a 936 Hakko for a while now, and it's great--stable, reliable, really makes soldering much, much easier than a cheapo iron. Used Wellers before, and I thought they were quite comparable.

I can't believe it's been over a year since I posted this ...
Well both are great, Both will do the job if you pick the right model and tip.
I wish I had disposable income and space to get full reworking station, but i'm just day dreaming - Not that I really need one...
