Hi, Mike. I'm at a loss for words to truly discuss the magnitude of this, but I'm really sorry to see what happened over there. It does help me update my mentality, though. From day to day, it's easy to forget how fortunate most of us really are to have relatively stable access to resources (food, water, shelter, amenities). I do mean fortunate, because we often don't realize just how easily that can change. And by "we," I absolutely include myself. I'll get upset about traffic costing me another five minutes or some other petty thing, when in the grand scheme of things, they aren't important at all. On the flip side, these events also show just how caring and selfless people (and other animals) can be in trying to help those that were affected.

My mom still has the majority of her relatives in the PI, but as far as we know, they're all ok. It was a terrible storm

Super Typhoon Haiyan Disaster Relief : Charity Navigator

Direct Relief seems to be one of the better options. They spend 98.7% of their money on the program rather than administrative or fundraising expenses.

Glad you and your family are safe. This really affected me even more now I've gone through this as have others here. There was a news segment and lady who's leg was amputated and it moved me to tears.
