Any thoughts as to which would be the better basis for a budget HT?
HK dpr 2005 - $499
Onkyo 601 - $190

Bought both to compare, but am having some difficulty since these were open box, and having trouble setting up.

Thanks

The large differences in prices make it a somewhat unfair comparison...Try the onkyo 702 receiver.

Stick with the DPR 2005. That listed at $1799 when new. It's a great deal, and a powerful unit. For another $100, here's something to consider. http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4038867
Either unit will grow with you.

Thanks for the suggestion on the JVC. I plan to stick with one of the two I bought, and lean toward the HK just because of MSRP. That itself is a weak reason to keep it. I am a little concerned about digital amp quality vs analog amp quality, and some people seem to think the HK is a "buggy" unit. Also, people say digital receivers use "cheap" parts. I have them both set up pretty well. So far, it seems HK wins on movies & TV (logic 7), while the onkyo wins on music (all chan stereo). Tough to compare since I can't swap one for the other on the same tracks / movie scenes without swapping speaker wires. I guess I need some bannana jacks to do this better.

Compare Price is not as big a difference as you would think. You can get the 2005 for $799 easily, and the 601 is basically the same as the 602 which sells for $499 at circuit city.

The 601 lacks 2 things that the 602 has - 7 amps and auto calibration. Aside from that, I would say they are probably nearly identical. I installed a 601 for a customer not too long ago, and I have to acually say I was surprised at the quality of this unit. The amp section is solid, and sound quality is good, setup was fairly easy and was simple enough to be done via the front panel (since I had no connection for OSD).

Question #1 should have been - what speakers are you going to run? Could make a big difference in what I'd recommend.

For the average budget system, the 601 would likely be a good starting point.

At your price point, you might also take a look at the Pioneer 1015Tx, depending on what speakers you plan to drive.

Is this deal still available (dpr 2005 for $499) ?
Would appreciate if you could direct me to the deal links.

Thank you
