Hi:

Just joined the forum and would like to say Hi.

Also, maybe I can get some adice on a new A/V Receiver. I am looking to upgrade my current receiver (Yamaha HTR - 5850) and would like to know what you guys think.

I would like to have something that has DTS HD. My budget is $1500. Any ideas?

Thank you

I suggest the Onkyo TX-SR805
it has both DTS HD and DD HD plus HDMI 1.3
it can be had on onecall.com for $899 plus shipping
pretty good deal if you ask me

1500 bucks is a lot of receiver; what are you trying to push?

haha agreed maybe you could get those emotiva separates. The reference theater series is $50 over your budget, but they are highly regarded on AH

Is $1500 a lot of Receiver, Steven? Not for an Audio Field Marshall, perhaps.

LOL

It all depends on your wants, and needs for your system. :D

$1500 is nothing for a Audio Field Marshall.

New Receiver

Thanks for the welcome and your suggestions

Maybe $1500 is too much, but I am looking for a good receiver that can give me DTS HD and be durable.

Obviously, if I can get a good receiver for less I will go for it.

Thanks again

I have Infinity Centre (PC250) fronts (P162) and backs (P142).
The Onkyo TX-SR605 will do fine power wise, what other extra features are you looking for aside from DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD processing?

Hi, Seth:

No that is about it.

I appreciate your comments. I have always been a Yamaha fan, but I am willing to switch.

Please just send a check for half the amount you saved to Seth and myself. You'll still be $500 ahead of the game. :D

Well the Yamaha RX-V661 doesn't have on-board DTS-HD or Dolby Digital TrueHD decoding on board. It can take a decoded stream from a capable HD DVD/Blu-ray player in the form of high resolution Multichannel LPCM up to 5.1 though. Note that future Blu-ray and HD DVD players will typically exclude on-board decoding for the high resolution formats.

The Yamaha RX-V661 also does not transcode all inputs to one HDMI output, however the Onkyo TX-SR605 does.

To get those features you would need to get the Yamaha RX-V1800, and it is a nice receiver and if you want to spend more to get a receiver that will be more flexible in the future in the case that you upgrade your speakers.

The only thing that makes me partial to Onkyo is the prices they have. They have the best bang for buck at the moment throughout their entire line IMO. I have owned Yamaha(3), Onkyo(3), Pioneer(1standard/1Elite), Denon(2), Sony(1), JVC(3), Sherwood(1), Kenwood(2), and a few other receivers and can say for the most part they all sound pretty good so long as they aren't pressed beyond their fidelity firewall. Cheap Kenwood and Sony receivers don't cut it, Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer Elite, and Sherwood Newcastle all have good receivers out right now with the HDMI 1.3 spec and Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD decoding with a ton of features. You really can't go wrong.:)
