Hi everyone,

This is my first posting.

Upon allowing myself to recently look in the mirror and finally admit that I'm a bonafide audiophile without shame, I then began the healing process of selling my outdated stereo/DVD/VHS equipment as well as my Redbook CD collection and diving head first into the world of SACD/DVD-A and 7.1 audio. I've been doing a lot of research over the last few weeks and I'm strongly leaning towards the following components:

1) OPPO DV-980H 7.1 DVD/SACD/DVD-A player ($169 oppodigital.com)
2) Onkyo TX-SR705 7.1 receiver ($580 amazon.com)

I already own a Panasonic TH-42PX60U 42" Plasma HDTV, so what's missing, of course, is a 7.1 speaker set. An audio sales manager recently told me that speakers make up 70% of a great-sounding system, not the media player or the receiver. My living room is maybe 30 x 15 and my primary focus is SACD/DVD-A playback, not DVD playback or video games. Any speaker recommendations alongside the 2 components I mentioned above?

Thank you for reading this post and providing me with a response, if any.

Cheers!

Hey Dan. Welcome to the forum!

Good choice with the sacd...I love mine. As far as speaker recommendations, you may do well to post a dollar amount, and how important bass (the .1) is to you. Cheers.

Welcome, Dan!

The best advice that I can give for speakers is to go audition as best you can. Speaker preference is very personal, and what some people love...others hate. Ideally, you'd be able to audition them in your home to truly find out how they sound in the environment that you'll be in.

There are many good brands out there quality-wise. You can search the forums here and check out the numerous recommendations, and you'll likely get some on this tread, too. Aperion Audio is one that I recommend because they offer a no-risk 30-day free trial (they'll pay shipping both ways if you return them) and they get very good reviews. A friend has them, and I thought they sounded good (of course, you might hate them - hence the no-risk trial).

Happy hunting!
