You have to find out where the damage is. If the damage is in the "receiver" unit, a new sub won't fix things. Do you have any other sub you can try connecting to the system?

The damage probably is in the sub box -- you could get a computer speaker system with a sub, but be careful to check how each sub connects up -- many use proprietray multipin plugs.

An inexpensive sub is at Radio Shack, for about $100 it looks like a B&W OEMed unit...

Double check your settings/calibrations. Is it possible that the sub-level with respect to the rest of the speakers was turned down in the reciever? I only ask as I've got little guys around here who LOVE remote. Occationally they to a place I'd rather they not be such as set up menu's etc.

I hate to break it to you, but Panasonic HTIBs don't allow subwoofer changing. The Amplifier for all the speakers is located in the subwoofer.

You'd be better off pulling out the manual and doing some reading on settings. Then, try differet placements.

If that fails, call Panasonic.

Its not one of those HT systems ALL speakers hook up to the AV control System receiver

Oh, well in that case, a new subwoofer would solve the problem.

I don't know if I'd classify your panasonic speaker as a subwoofer. 5"-6" woofers are typically found in speakers and are designed to produce mid range frequencies. Look for a dedicated sub with at an 8" or larger woofer and amplifier. The $200 Onix X-sub from av123.com would be a good entry level option.
As suggested previously, most subs are designed to receiver a line level LFE signal from the receiver. This output might not be available on your HTIB receiver.

Well, Sebedra, you said it wasn't working as well as it used to...
Frankly, with replacement subs starting at $100, shop time to repair it would be more expensive...

Or you could wait and put the $100-$200 toward an entire new HTIB...

No offese to you but I would not call your system a "Home Theater". :) Sure it has five speakers, a "sub" and makes noise, but I would hardly call it a "Home Theater"

Again, this is no offese to you or your budget.

For $500, I would have purchased an decent entry level receiver and a good pair of bookshelf speakers. Then, as I saved more money, I would add a sub, center and rears, in that order. The receiver and bookshelves alone would probably meet or exceed your current system's performance level. Not only that, but you most likely would not be having the issues you are now.

The "Rat Shack" sub someone mentioned before is not really any better than what he has currently. It is only good down to a measly 50hz.

Sorry, Sebedra -- I meant put the money you might spend replacing the sub toward -- as in a portion of -- the cost of replacing the entire system.

I was just mentioning this as something to think about -- many folks do use breakdowns as a reason to upgrade. :)

If your system is working well and you have no other reasons to upgrade, replacing just the sub makes sense.
