Ok, I'm going to post a link to a receiver that may not get the warm and fuzzy approval that some receivers get. It is a 3 yr old JVC Flagship Receiver that weighs over 48 lbs, is THX Ultra certified, super powerful, and on top of that it sounds really darn good, costs about $600 brand new and has the 2 yr factory warranty. Keep the mean comments to a minimum guys ;) .

.....Takeereasy, my past is checkered with JVC products that knocked me out....I currently have a JVC S-VHS VCR, and wouldn't hesitate to endorsing JVC as a product line....would someone please compare this JVC Flagship Premier Surround-Receiver, to one of them 3805 boat-anchors?....and a few more watts-per, ain't gonna' mean much considering the price, as we reflect and remember 3 db's increase in sound pressure takes double watts which BETTER be still under the "headroom ceiling"....but speaking of looking in the attic, "distortion", is what ruins our speakers, period, and at the point of loudness you are making a face from the distortion, just imagine the face your speakers are making as the postonic movement gets influenced, for one thing.....

....the green chicklets thing....I think it should be an incentive for ALL to do their best, and I applaud it's implementation, actually....and....like Bose, it appears it's here to stay, haha.....

.....anyone assigning a negative vote for being bested in a "dignified" confrontation would not last long in my employ, I assure you....

.....this site's still not a fraction of what it could be, immho, and if an ego is truly left at the door, it cannot get bruised....over.....

.....edit...."dignified" confrontation......

.....and you guys who come here to read and ain't registered.....you don't want to get in on the green-and-red chicklet voting?....at the bottom of the forums page, it says there are almost 8800 members....now member, to me, would say guys who are registered, wouldn't you say?....

.....Gentlemen, if the administrators of this site could boast of 10,000 in MEMBER-readership, that would only be about 1200 more, and would be 5 figures to claim in dealing with perspective sponsors for this site, without which, we wouldn't be, and, I quit for the day, maybe.....

Nothing wrong with that unit. It's a beast, and will run 4 ohm speakers - something the Denon 3805 and Yamaha 2500 won't do (as well). Very impressive. I'm just not sure why the unit's THD increases when pushing 7 channels. It's like they focused more on the stereo aspect of it, then lost the budget when driving the other 5 channels. Notice how they rated it at 1kHz instead of 20-20,000Hz, and .2/.7% THD? J&R's specs are different than JVC's (much better in surround mode). Wonder what gives?

In any event, the THD specs are below audible level. And being surround channel distortion, it's not that big an issue.

Still, for $600, it's right up there with the Marantz SR8400 deal several months back. A worthy alternative to the Denon 3805 and Yamaha 2500 IMHO. I really like the three band parametric eq for all channels. Nice find, Take. A green chiclet for you and Brian (as soon as I'm allowed again).

I actually heard this receiver the other night, that's what prompted me to look it up. I was helping a friend bring a couch to his Parent's home because I was stupid enough to answer "nothing" when asked what I was doing that night. When his dad found out I liked audio stuff I got the grand tour, with a beer in hand of course. The "projector" room as it is called was awesome. The projector was by a company called Seleco or something very close. There was a motorized screen that must have been at least 100". There were two rows of theatre seats, super cushy leather chairs that would seat 8 total (the total # of the family, 2 parents, 6 kids). Two of the chairs were heated/vibrating because "old people like their creature comforts" I was told. There were room treatments and curtains and theatre lighting and one of the chairs even had a key to turn it on. All of the speakers were in-walls (big ones) even the sub (gigantic). I was like a kid in a candy shop, then I saw the audio rack. Hmmm... Kind of sparse looking. Denon 2900 DVD player, a crown 2 channel amp bridged to run the sub, and a gulp... JVC receiver. A big JVC receiver, but still, how could you have all this nice stuff and then skimp out on the receiver? Then he powered everything up and put on a movie for me. It was Top Gun and I was blown away. I expected dialouge problems like with my Sony receiver. I expected lackluster dynamics. I expected something to be missing just because it said JVC on the side. So anyway 3 or 4 beers later (mini fridge in the projector room no getting up for us, and the thing de resistance: a small private bathroom directly adjoining the HT room) and after watching all of Top Gun instead of the 5 minutes we were supposed as well as listening to about 5 songs on the Eagles HFO DTS DVD, it was time to go. I was very impressed with this receiver to say the least. It may not have all of the latest gadgets, but it does everything required of it with great ability. It had no trouble powering a complete Home Theatre to very movie theatre like sound.

And that's what it's all about. It sounds like your friends father has "won the race." I wonder if all that was professionally installed, or if he did it himself. Did you get the name on the speakers/sub?

It was a pro job all the way. My buddy is from an OLD STYLE Italian family with tons of cash (all legitimate from family businesses). The grandparents live with the parents and my buddy wasn't allowed to leave home till he was 27 and had his house and car paid for and a little something in the bank for rainy days. The dad built the room himself, with his 4 sons helping, but every piece of the interior work was done by an installer. The wife picked out the seating and colours of course.

The Dad picked up the receiver in Dallas Texas and he asked the installer to use it and his Denon DVD player that he had with him when he was in the States. I think the speakers were M&K, but I'm not 100% sure. A big part of me wants to say B&W, but I don't know if they do speakers like this or not. These were the closest to the movie theatre sounding speakers I've ever seen, and that includes Paradigm Reference/Signature and Monitor Audio Gold home movie theaters at my local dealer. I still can't believe that the JVC was driving there dpeakers so well, but it did. Supposedly the installer was impressed too, he'd been pushing for seperates that would have really upped the cost. Both the center and sub were behind the screen and the sub was an absolute monster. At least 15", I'm pretty sure it was 18". You could feel bass hit you physically when the afterburner scenes were playing. The crown amp was bridged to put out I believe 1000w rms. I never saw it but I guess there is a whole seperate room for the wiring because of the draw on electricity.

The best part of the whole night was that my friend's dad was so happy to have 2 guys in the house to watch a "man" movie with. All 4 sons are out now but both daughters are still home. The ladies out vote him all the time and he can't even sneak in a copy of Rambo without having it switched out for the Notebook. Yeah, he'd got it made though.

.....and Buck, you know I was kidding about the Denon line of receivers, they're way up the ladder for a reason and that reason is quality....JVC is quality also huge, imo....that 186 dollar to my door JVC receiver Greg has, made my homemade Cornwalls w/piezo sound better than I ever made them sound with McIntosh.....
