Grainy image on Panasonic 50" S2

Just got a 50S2 and I have a few questions. First off when I 1st hooked it up I was surprised to see a grainy picture. I have a 6 year old Panasonic 720p that I have never seen grain on (unless it was a movie with a grainy look ex.300). I set it to cinema and threw in a DVD with a THX optimizer for a quick calibration. This seemed to help but you could still see the grain. I walked up to the TV and with a blank black screen showing I could see little white dots dancing all over the screen. I have never seen this on my old 720p set. So I got on the AVS forum and found D-nice’s calibrations so I thought I would give it a shot. I did not adjust the service menu and have not done the 100h break-in as he suggest. As I was doing this I noticed while adjusting the Brightness that once it hit +60 the dancing dots disappeared completely. I went back to +61 and they would reappear. The greater the Brightness setting the more dancing dots. I thought I would check this out on my old TV so I adjusted the brightness all the way up and never saw any dots just a smooth transition from a black screen to a grayish screen. Is this a defect in my TV? If not then what are all the dots and why does this not happen on my old TV? Thanks for any help.

I have tried to reply to your post 2 times. Both times ive typed a 4 paragraph response. Explaining in detail what you are talking about. Both times my comp shut down b4 i could finish because my comp has a virus. SOO frustrating!

Anyways im gonna keep this short. I have a V10 & I know what you are talking about. Thats just how plasmas work. The "dancing dots" shouldnt be visible from any less than about 4 foot away. How far do you sit from the S2?

Once the Brightness setting is correct you shouldnt have this problem. Your display is not defective. If the "dots" are there at 61 & not at 60 then that tells you about where the brightness setting should be set at. My V10 is calibrated using DVE HD-Basics bluray & it is set at 65. EVEY set is different but you can see my settings in the MembersGallery under "Timoteo's 683 Theater". This will give you a starting point of where your set should be at. What you should do is invest $25 on a calibration disc & do it yourself or pay $400+ for a pro to do it.

Thos "dots" are the nature of the breast. Congrats on your new TV. Get it dialed in after 200 hours of use & ENJOY!

Hope this helps you out!!!

LOL. That happens to me all the time when talking on my cell phone. I will be talking for 5 min. and I get no response and then I realize that I lost the call 3 min. ago :) . I sit about 10' away from the screen and I could notice the grain from there before I did the quick cal. After the quick cal. I could still see it a little, that is when I walked up to the tv and saw the dots. Why do you think this doesn't happen on my 6 year old plasma? Is this some new processing that plasmas have? Im going to look for a calibration disk on netflix to do a better calibration. Wish I had $300-$400 to let a pro do it, but what fun would that be.
