I have a Yamaha RX-V663 reciever, 50" Panasonic Plasma, the 6.1 NHT Classic 3 series setup, etc etc and even acoustic treatments for the room. The only time I can get it to have surround is in 7CH Enhancer mode..which simply mixes it and plays the same out of all speakers. I've tried playing with the surround decoders, straight and straight enhancer modes, and other settings but really can't get it right . And i've tried using several DVD's and even some blu-rays played through my PS3 like LOST and Superbad. Help!

Are you getting any sound out of your surround speakers or is it just your surround back speaker that you are not getting sound from?

What components to you have other than what you already listed? How do you have them connected?

I'm assuming you have your source... dvd or bd player outputting correctly. This was stupid thing I overlooked when I setup my OPPO. I had it set to Stereo instead of RAW which just bitstreamed everything.

Source components

Yes,
Many source components defualt to PCM output format for compatibility, you need to the "bitstream" or RAW format to get a multichannel signal over a digital optical or coax connection. I am not sure but the same settings may apply for audio over HDMI.

On the front of my Yamaha receiver there are little lights which indicate which type of signal it is receiving. For a stereo signal, the 2 L and R lights are on. For DVD, 6 lights are on to indicate a 5.1 audio source.

Make sure you are using HDMI audio for BluRay playback and HDMI, digital optical or digital coax for audio from the DVD player.
