Upon hooking this up, it played well but had a little hum.
This turned into a louder hum that is consistent
-used the search feature and none of the solutions fixed this-

Gets confused when turning on and the video or audio do not play or show up on the TV. Usually if i turn it off, wait about 10 seconds, turn it back on; it will correct this problem.

Sometimes when i turn it on, it freezes and all of the panel lights light up and the receiver is functionless. To fix this, i have to use the main power switch to turn off the receiver.

What to do?!?!?!?

Return it for another, or ask for my money back?
Seems this is a fairly problematic thing for this model so i am afraid of doing this over and over again. Upgrade???? Maybe i can talk them into it!

have it replaced, sometimes Harman Kardon have units that hum, my 335 had it out of the box. I had it replaced and no more problem.

how much did you get it for?

$500 shipped. This was the last 635 they had in the refurb. Maybe they will get me into the 745 or 637 or something newer.

yup, i think they will. i've heard people say harman refurb has great customer service

people actually wish they get the last old model with a problem so they get the next newer model for the same price :)

Here is the message i sent to them. Does this sound fair enough?
Hello, I just purchased the AVR-635 from the online ebay store. I have two problems with the unit.
1. When on, there is a humming in the speakers when in analog mode and there is also crosstalk between sources while in analog mode.
2. When I turn the receiver on, it seems to get confused. Sometimes it will just sit there with all the lights on the front panel on and you cannot turn it off without using the main power to reset it. Other times it will come on and appear to be operating normally, but there will be no picture or sound. After you turn it off and then back on, it will usually begin to operate normally.

I understand the unit is a refurb, but it should operate as if it were new. Please email me back at matt_busby520@hotmail.com or call me at 1-618-719-6192 with solutions to my problems. I am going to assume it will be the result of me having to return it or exchange it at my inconvenience. We can discuss this further upon your reply to me.

Thank You,
Matt

sounds fair to me. though I wouldn't pay one more cent for anything if i were given the exact same model.

if i were given an upgrade model ... i'll think about it :)

i dont plan on paying more for anything. Whether new, better, or the same. I will just instill my money in someone that can offer me a working product the first time. Might just keep the pioneer now, the Hk doesnt make a very big difference at all with the speakers i have.

Reset instruction and remote batteries

Toward the end of your manual you will find instructions on how to reset the unit. Reset it. Get some new quality batteries for the remote. I heard a rumor that weak batteries can make the H/K's screwy. The reset thing has worked for me and now I guess I believe that it is the answer to everything. H/K can email you a prepaid shipping label so that the return costs you nothing if it comes to that. If you need to return it and they can't replace it with another 635 you might consider that they have newer models that have an HDMI 1.1 capability. Look at the 445 or the 347. Who did you buy it from and can you get your money back? The price you paid is okay but not great and I think you would get more use out of a more current model that can be had for less than $500. Good luck with this.:)

bought it off their online store. So i can still get my money back. I did try the reset too to no avail. It still screws up after it was previously on for a while. Do the newer models have more options than this? This one seemed not too much better than my pioneer almost all the way around and was kinda plain on the decoding and processing. Sounded a little better is all. And the reset button doesnt fix the humming either. So yeah... Seems to hum mostly when its in anything but stereo mode. I think the remedy is going to be to send it back. And who knows, if they dont have anymore of my model, maybe i will get upgraded :D

HK 35 series is about as plain as you can get. only the basics except different crossovers for every set of channels

really it didnt sound any better than my pioneer until it started to get earbleed loud. Then again, i had a lot of time into setting up the pioneer and was a 30 min job on the infinity. <- Didnt use the EZset either. No use to with that damn hum...it will go apeshit.

HK7300 is what i know they want to send me :D LOL

same price? alright!

you dont even need external amps for that!

but check the website for the size and weight, i know it's significantly bigger and heavier than ordinary AVR's.

too bad they wont really do that. That thing is nice. They do not have anymore comparable receivers to offer me that i know of. I have been checking their stock of receivers daily to see what i could get. I just want one that has the same power and works.

Update!

No news from HK.

But i tried resetting it again and shortly after using the OSD, my video is gone all together after i tried to return to a normal viewing screen. It was flickering and whatnot while i was setting it up and then poof..its gone. Tried resetting it again but nothing. Still doing everything it did before also.

I am also hearing like a white noise crackling sound through the speakers. Even the ones that are not active.

It was an occasional thing with the receiver, but now its an everytime thing. Sounds lke it will be going back for sure:(

Anyone have any thoughts on this. i need the help bad. I am a newb to having problems like this. From a highend receiver, i would expect high end results. (clarification: High end ocmpared to previous ones i have owned)
Seems like i got a bad apple, but i am not going to let it spoil the buch until i try atleast one more.

It took HK two days to respond to an email I sent them. They will get back with you.

Im working on three...i am an impatient person when it comes to paying for something and not getting what i paid for. (biting nails b/c the anticipation is killing me)

i have the pioneer back in and it sounds great compared to that boat anchor HK. If the next one they send doesn't sound any better i am refunding...
And no hum or crackling from it either, so its not the way i have my wired run or anything.
