I recently bought a used Proton AA-1150 amplifier, and was planning to use my Yamaha receiver's pre-out jacks straight to the amp, but a friend of mine suggest that I use a standard pre-amp for better results. Any ideas on how the yamaha receiver's pre-amp will sound, should I open my eyes to a line of pre-amps? poss tube? any help is greatly appreciated! -Brandon

Although I prefer and use a seperate pre-amp, most of them are only 2 channel. If your primary usage is multichannel you may have some difficulty finding a 4, 5 or 6 channel pre-amp. If your receiver is 2 channel it wouldn't be an issue. I also prefer tubes. A lot of people consider them to be obsolete. There are also those who wouldn't be without them, preferrably as early in the amplification stages as possible. I also use tubes to power my ES panels but solid state to drive my subs. The pre-amp outs on your receiver are probably more than adaquate. However, I should admit that I have never owned a receiver. If you have access to a decent pre-amp give it a listen in your rig and then decide.

It will work fine. I've done this in my ht setup with a receiver.

What are your hopes and dreams for that preamp?

What better results are you hoping for?

What are the specs on that receiver, THD=N, fr, etc.? I seriously doubt you will be ahead in sonics land with a separate unit.

You don't mention which model Yamaha receiver you have but it's probably fine. I'm using my Yamaha the same way right now & it's great. All the features with better power supplies.

The receiver is a RX-V870, it was one model behind the flagship in about 96' I think, My main concern here is: Will the pre-amp be a "quality" enough pre-amp to utilize the full bandwith and capability of the proton amp? I know the proton is a bit better amplifier and has a very powrful dual power supply section. Thanks for the replies!

I would think you would want the amp to have a slightly better capability than the processor. After all, you wouldn't want limitations in the amp to be choking the capability of the processor. I think it will probably sound really great. :)
