It kind of makes my plans to bump my speed up from 20/5mb to 35/35mb pale by comparison.

The part of town I live in is far too crappy for my house to get selected even if they would come to our area... But if this goes main stream, I don't know what I'd do with that fast of internet connection.

That would be nice to have. I already have fiber optic connection seemingly with no limits other than how busy the net is. I've tested my line speed and gotten up to 56mbps. Average speed tested is usually about 25-30mbps.

Thats cruising pretty fast - but 1gbps?

Damn!

Maybe Google will use my area for a test bed. I'd like that.

Let's say it becomes reality. How long before content catches up and grinds it to a halt. I mean back when we had 2400 baud modems, we used to log on to BBS's (bulletin boards) Everything was fine. Then you could start downloadning games and GIFs. Everything slowed. Then came 9600 and 14.4.

Remember when broadband first came out how lightening fast everything was? There wasn't all these ads, Flash apps, and everything else slowing down the sites. I'm just wondering what the next incarnation of content will be because you know they're going to take advantage of the pipe. I just wonder if websites for instance will just be crammed with so much high bandwidth content that it won't be any faster. Granted downloads of files and stuff will be amazing. I think at those speeds, it's a whole new ballgame and it's a game-changer.

Yes but this is an exponential leap in speed. This is faster than any home computers maximum IO speed can handle. Many times that actually.

That's all well and good, but what about the huge % of America still stuck on dial-up or other crap connections?

Even dial up wasn't available to me until 1999 (40 hour monthly limit for years), then DSL speeds (via wireless with a monthly bandwidth cap) in 2006 to present.

There needs to be less of a focus on "faster" and more focus on availability.

Yeah but this was true with the introduction of cable / dsl modems also - I remember the external port speeds being capped at 56k! The technology will definitely match whatever is out there. Heck my bro downloads at 20mbps already - it's still too slow!
