Hunting around ebay, out of curiousity for a decent used 2 or 3 channel amp. Definitely need some advice. Any recommendations?

Saw an Adcom gfa-555.

Thanks, but what brand and type should should I look for? Something to run the fronts from the receiver pre-out. 100 - 200 watts.

Check out the older amps from the 70's. You can find a great deal on some older Sansui's, Yamaha's, Pioneers, etc... that have massive capacitors and heat sinks. These old beasts weigh in excess of 70lbs, and can be had for under $400. You may even run into some older McIntosh stuff at good pricing for a decent price. You only need 50-100 watts if you find a McIntosh to drive just about anything. You'll see by the weight of the units what type of quality you're getting. Some of the older Yamaha amps were class A, which is very rare.

Hafler, Parasound, and Adcom (class A and A/B amps) can be had on Ebay at reasonable prices.

B&K amps are well made dependable products. I think they are a premium amps that are not overpriced on the used market. There are quite a few for sale on Ebay and Audiogon. Last fall, I bought a B&K ST-140, a stereo amp 105 watt/channel. It is about 15-20 years old, in excellent shape and I paid $275 including UPS shipping.

For example, on Audiogon now is a B&K ST-202+, 200 watts/channel going for $275, that may be OK. I wonder why that price is so low?

Other makes I was shopping for were Hafler, NAD, Denon, and Rotel.

Not knowing your price range, I'd recommend a Rotel-1070 130 watts x 2. It shouldn't set you back too much. You can always try to find a Rotel-1050...they can be found for around $300, but it is under 100 watts per channel.

If you really want closer to 200 watts a channel, I'd recommend an older Rotel 990 or Rotel-991. Those can be found on Audiogon for around $475...they are an earlier model of the current Rotel-1080 but the sound is about the same.

Can you tell I like Rotel? :D

That is a tube amp. If that picture is the Onix SP3, it is a 38 watt/channel integrated tube amp that sells new for $1,000. Is it new or used? Am I correct? If so, I am unfamiliar with this amp.

We thought you had asked for recommendations for used separate solid-state amps in the 100-200 watt/channel range. Thats what all the above recommendations were.

Swerd, I was just kidding around when I posted that link. No way would I purchase that amp. :D

I'm just trying to learn about amps. What are good brands, used/new, prices and what type is best. Just a 2 or 3 channel amp if I decide to run the fronts or center channel, when I hopefully purchase ht equipment in the next month or so.

I second the B&K recommendation. They're great amps. My dad has an older ST-202+ that has been going strong for years and years.
