Good time to negotiate with DirecTV

Last year I called up DirecTV because I thought that paying $80 for basic cable with HD and a DVR was too much. They offered to knock my bill down to about $50 for a year. Cool deal. So when that deal expired I called them back and got them to do the same thing for me. Not a week later this whole Viacom fiasco happens. Of the 18 channels that DirecTV is not showing due to the contract dispute I only really watch MTV and Comedy Central. Not a huge deal but a bummer to be sure. Sucks I missed Tosh last night.

Since I'm missing out on some of my shows I decided to call DirecTV and tell them how unhappy I was. It took some pushing on my part but I got them to give me NFL Sunday Ticket for free. :D

I've heard of other people getting discounts, pay channels AND NFL Ticket all for free. If you've got DirecTV now's a good time to try and get some free stuff out of them.

I HAVE NO CABLE AT ALL :) Guess what, I don't miss it one bit. I pay more for faster internet, but it is still a lot cheaper than cable AND internet.

DirecTV was at Frys doing their pitch and the guy walked up to me. "What service do you currently have...?" I looked him right in the eyes and said "I don't have ANY service." He didn't even respond, just smiled and walked away. I originally got Dish that way through a sales pitch at Frys and I got TWO years of Dish for $46/mo with HD and a two room DVR.

Between Netflix, Hulu, youtube and sometimes directly on the specific channel's site, I am able to watch the vast majority of what I am interested in. Sharks games or the playoffs are another story...but I can live with that.

DirecTV and NFL Ticket are the only options for me if I want to watch my Chargers. I tried watching a few games on Justintv but that didn't work too well and going to sports bars can be fun but gets expensive. I like DVR'ing the game and then starting to watch it about 1/2 hour in so I can FF through all the commercials.

Yes, the one thing I do miss about a DVR is no commercials and watch whenever, but I found that I didn't always watch half of what I DVR'ed anyway. Almost no commercials on web too though, but yeah, I pretty much have to find a bar or pizza place that is good with Hockey to watch games and that does get expensive :)

The same goes for Dish dropping many of those channels, so those with them may want to take the time to call them too :)

I have had Directv for 3 weeks and called and asked, politely, how they were going to compensate me for losing VH1 Classic and Comedy Central. Since I'm still new I have all the movie channels, so she said she would give me $5.00 off a month for 3 months.
Sweet!
No need to be rude, just ask and see what you can get.

If you're thinking about getting Directv, pm me and I'll give you my account number and we'll both get $100.00! Okay, the catch is, it's $10.00 off a month for ten months. You can sign up ten people a year.

Ok my Dtv is really messing up right now. The thing on the end of the arm of the dish is going out. So says a Dtv installer after I explain to him the symptoms. I want to upgrade to the DVR units. I'm guessing I'll complain about not getting those channels also. Hope it works.
