Hi, I am moving to a new townhouse and i am planning to build a home theater in the basement. I have HTIB Onkyo S7409 which has receiver Onkyo NR-609. I was using the speakers and woofer that i received with this HTIB. I am planning to upgrade my home theater system now. Please suggest me if i need to upgrade my receiver or keep NR609 receiver and spend that amount on speakers and sub woofer.

Also, please suggest me some good F/C/L speakers and subwoofer. My budget is $1000 for both and I can go $200 more if required. Any suggestions are appreciated. my basement dimentions are 14 X 8 X 9 ft. Thanks.

Using the 609, might be fine, but you really need to figure out what you're trying to use it for and with so you know for sure.

Do you want to have a network receiver?

Are you going to be multi-zone?

The speakers it will be driving may be an influencing factor.

Volume levels may be a contributing factor.

I would take a serious look at the Andrew Jones designed Pioneer speakers. They are excellent speakers, made even better when you consider your budget. You could get all 5 speakers for under $500, use the other $500 for a kicka$$ sub and anything else you need (speaker wire banana plugs, etc) and the system will be great.

I'm sure there are other suggestions, but that receiver, with these speakers and maybe a PSA sub will be excellent.

Word to the wise, be wary of advice you get on HTF, especially from schan.

I would stick with the 609. The Pioneer speakers would be good. If you have a Fry's nearby, you can get the Pioneer SP bookshelf speakers for $70 a pair at the moment. They also have Polk Lsi speakers on sale for a very good price, those are worth checking out. Something else to check out is the Hsu Hybrid 2 3.1 package, it comes with some fairly beefy speakers and a pretty serious subwoofer, and would come out to about $1150 shipped.
