Good receiver < $500

Can anyone recommend a good receiver for less than $500? A few that I have been looking at include:

Sony STRDE997
Onkyo TXSR601
Harman Kardon AVR230

I personally wouldn't look at the Yamaha's in this price range. I find them too unrefined and ragged (and a bit bright). I also wouldnt put too much thought in the Sony. Their amps havent really been up to snuff. The Onkyo and the H/K are viable contenders. Also look at the Denon 1800 models (1803, 1804...). You may be able to find a Marantz in this range (the SR4300 or 4400), if so, consider this as well.

You might consider waiting about a month for the Onkyo TX-SR602. Considerable upgrades from what little info I've seen but quite a step above the current 601. Due out in August, but I've not seen any actual press release yet.

Retail for the 600 series is always $499, but you can bet that some online retailers will offer it for $449 right after it comes out.

I will not be ready to purchase for another couple months so I may check out the Onkyo TX-SR602.

If you want to spend $500 now, wait and save maybe $200 more and get a really viable Yammie or whatever. Consider the Yammie 1400.

I'd also suggest you stay away from the Sony DE line,.... unless of course you want to buy my DE995 for $400 :)
