Pixies: Live in Newport is on tv right now in HD. I figured I'd check it and wow, they're great. Now I would like to check out some of their music. Can anyone recommend a couple cds? Something essential?
Thanks.

Doolittle is their true classic, start-to-finish awesome and highly influential. If you can only get one, that's the place to start.

Alternatively, you could just start from the beginning - their Come On Pilgrim EP, then Surfer Rosa, then Doolittle.

After Doolittle, I think the consensus opinion is that Bossanova was a bit of stumble, but Trompe Le Monde a pretty good comeback. They have a pretty amazingly consistent output though, I must say.

Thanks for the tips! It's on again and I'm gonna keep it for a bit. It was filmed in 2006 in HD, so I'd imagine there'll be a blu ray sometime. I'll keep this until then and check out their CDs. I 'll buy what you recommended in the meantime.
Funny thing is...this isn't what I usually listen to. I listen to hard-rock. Does this mean the Pixies are obviously good?
I appreciate your feedback!

All of their albums rule, Trompe Le Monde never seems to get much love but I think it's awesome and underrated. Although Bossanova is probably their weakest it's still a solid album with some great tunes.

Doolittle is without a doubt the classic though, one of the best alternative rock albums of all time.

I'll second what everyone has said so far - Doolittle all the way. I got tired of these guys pretty quick though.

Longtime fan of the Pixies here. If you want a general overview, pick up the Pixies at BBC release, or I think they have a "greatest hits" available too. If you really like what you heard on TV, I too would recommend that you start with Surfer Rosa/Come on Pilgrim (not sure about now, but used to be available as a single CD), and continue chronologically with Doolittle, Bossanova (agreed that this is their weakest album), and Tromp le Monde.

Be sure to check out The Breeders - Last Splash. A side project, lead by Kim Deal (the Pixies bassist). This became her full time band post-Pixies. This album was made during the Pixies heyday and contains a lot of material that would have otherwise wound up on Bossanova (Kim was not nearly as "present" on that album, which is probably the reason that it is not nearly as loved as their other discs).

Another disc that would be worth checking out is the Complete "B" Sides collection. I have all of the stuff here in the form of the original pressings of the CD-Singles/Maxi-singles... or whatever the called them back then. So, I never picked this release up. My personal favorite Pixies song can be found here "Into the White," as well as the slowed down UK Surf version of "Wave of Mutilation." Some of the other cuts may not be that great but the two I mentioned are worth the cost of the disc, especially if you find it in the "used" bins.

Enjoy

I saw them live years back and I really never had a desire to listen to them again after that. They put on a rather uninspired show. Even though I like tracks from them here and there, I lost interest in them pretty quick as well.

I pretty much agree here but stopped at the steaming pile that was Bossanova. I too saw them in concert many years ago and even though I was a huge fan at the time, I could go my whole life and never see them live again. Boring to say the least. The fact that they played after Primus and before Jane's Addiction didn't help much either.

I've heard that their shows were fairly hit-and-miss, but luckily I managed to catch them on on nights. First was opening for Love an Rockets at the State Theater in Detroit, second time I think they headlined with Primus opening at the Latin Quarter. Both were great shows, and circa 1988-90ish. No love lost here. All the drugs do have an effect, sometimes good, sometimes not so good...
