Good match for the X-LS

I bought the X-ls, I was going to compare them with the ascends, but after today I listened to Dark side of the moon, i decided to keep them. I figure rright now in my apartment no other speaker is going to sound like this for this price, so once I buy my house I can go after some nice floor standing speakers.....

ANyway, I went ahead and ordered the X-CS today for my center 109 on b-stock! now im looking for some surrounds, Id like to get the x-ls for the rears, but the wife aint having it. (possibly talk her into it, but im a littl eiffy about it as well due to size) I currently have a piar of boston acoustic cr-67 in the back which sound good, but I think I may be able to get something comparable for less money. For instance - One call has the cr-57, for only 178 a piar, I paid 250 for the pair of cr-67... Im guessing the sound wont be too far off....There seems to be sick clearence specials going on on Bostons...

I am looking to get into SACD and other 5.1 audio, so im assuming you would want all speakers to match, The bostons sound pretty good but when I put on a dvd-a The bostons sound like the have way too much mids compared to the x-ls... and it is a little annoying...for movies it sounds fine..

Anyone have any recomendations???

You need fullrange speakers to get the best results from SACD/DVD-A. I tried the DVD-A thing. On my system, the DTS option worked out better. And, yes, I connected the 6 audio cables for multi-channel. IMO, your speakers are too small to handle fullrange SACD. And, you have to get pretty high-up in equipment to get bass management for m/c inputs. Things may have changed since I built my system. There may be a player that offers such. My player only offers a 100Hz crossover for DVD-A. That is why DTS sounds better. My receiver does not offer bass management on m/c input. Be sure you know your equipment before you invest alot of money.

I don't have full range speakers and my system sounds quite good with SACD and DVD-A. My speakers have the same -3dB as the X-LS, I use an 80Hz X-over and I can adjust the levels on both my receiver and player. Few receivers offer bass management on the m/c inputs, so it is very important to get a player that has at least basic bass management, and a receiver that has the ability to at least adjust the m/c levels as well is a benefit. The main problem with a player that has no bass management at all is the fact that there is a -10dB difference in bass between DVDs and hirez audio. For DVDs there is a +10dB is built into the decoding which hirez audio does not have, so you need to be able to compensate for that either at the player or receiver, and it is a surprisingly commonly missing feature.

As for a good match, the best thing would be to hold out for another pair of X-LSs. I use 5 identical speakers and m/c music sounds amazing. So what is the limiting factor that she doesn't like? Size? Price? Just tell her "It looks better when they all match...." Besides, I don't think you'll find many speakers at the price that will sound as good.

Again, let me stress, know your equipment. While I respect what j_garcia has stated, note his equipment in his sig. Far from low-end. His dvd player is $999.99 retail.

I would be willing to say there is a 99.9% chance that the OP's receiver doesn't have BM for m/c inputs. That is, if it even has m/c inputs. Know your equipment before you spend for something that cannot be connected correctly.

And, as I mentioned, you have to get an expensive player for it to have BM for m/c out. Unless a low cost model has came out over the last few years.

Onix speakers

AV123 has big plans for X-series speaker and the first floorstander model, the X-sls will be out in a couple months. There will also be an MTM and a MTM w/ powered woofers. They also have some surround type speakers in the works. You might consider holding out for the floorstanders and move the X-LS to surround duty.

Expensive is a relative term. My Denon 2200 also had BM and it cost almost me $560 (not cheap, but not $1k either), so you don't have to spend a grip to get a player that has BM, but I agree, you probably won't find it on the least expensive models.

Many thanks for your faith and confidence in us...

I can also tell you that many Professionals are turning to the x-series product as well...

Last night I had the pleasure and honour to visit with Mr. Dean Goodhill on the installation of his new x-based Editing Suite... Dean was of course the Academy Award Nominee for his great editing work on The Fugitive...

He's going with x-ls front and rear... and x-cs center and x-sub...

Here's a shot of us from last night - before he makes the change... :)

All the best...
