I don't know too much about audio, but I am investing about $70 in a good set of high quality audio headphones.

Currently, I am looking at these, the Sennheiser Hd 280:
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-280-Dynamic-Collapsible-Headphones/dp/B000065BPB/sr=8-3/qid=1167785317/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/103-3921929-1777456?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

I dont' know much about headphones, but are these the best I can get for about $70? If not, what are better?]

These are a few others I am looking at:
PXC 250:
http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PXC-250-Canceling-Headphones/dp/B000089GN2/sr=8-19/qid=1167786867/ref=sr_1_19/103-3921929-1777456?ie=UTF8&s=electronics

Or these grado sr60:
http://www.amazon.com/GRADO-Prestige-Series-SR60-Headphones/dp/B000G3HEXW/sr=8-29/qid=1167787000/ref=sr_1_29/103-3921929-1777456?ie=UTF8&s=musical-instruments

I'm a fan of Grado, I love my SR60's.
however, if you are looking for isolation, the SR60's would be a bad choice.

What is isolation (sorry, i don't know alot about audio, just what I loke as far as sound goes).

I want a surrounding style headphone, thats gets you immersed i guess is ther term, in the music.

the 280 pro's are a great set for the price, especially for knocking out ambient noise. If you are looking to really improve their performance you may want to also look into a Headphone amp Scored one off of ebay for 60$
http://www.headphone.com/products/headphone-amps/the-mobile-line/headroom-total-airhead.php

I think I paid 78$ out the door after Nebraska Furniture Mart Priced matched a sheet I took in to the store where as they had them listed at $250

Take this with a grain of salt as the only other headphones I have ever owned prior to them were simple Walmart Koss/Sony/Pioneer/Aiwa cheap ones. the 280's were a huge step up from there.

it means the headphons isolate you from the outside world.

the SR60's are a 'open' design headphone, so you will hear sounds from the room you are in, and if anyone is around when you are listening, thay will hear what you are listening to (but much quieter then you hear it).

The Sennheiser 280's are excellent as are the Grados. I can't testify on the Sennheiser noise cancelleing phones. Those pose additional electronics in the signal path and that could have some effect. I don't suppose you can audition them via Amazon but if you can stop at an audio store and try out phones by the same manufacturer you might get some insight into which fits your ears (comfort wise) and your musical preferences.

The Grado's have a very much in your face sound and many people find them uncomfortable. You either love them or hate them. Like speakers, headphones are personal preference. Another factor to be considered is what is going to drive the HPs. Some require more power than a portable can provide.

I'd recommend the Sony MDR-V6. It is an excellent headphone. It has been a reference for accuracy in studios for years (and still is). The headphone is built like a tank too. You can find them for around $70-$80 online, shipped. I use the clone (MDR-7506) and I think they are some of the best headphones available, at any price.

I also recommend the Sony MDR-V6 or MDR-7506 [same headphones, different model numbers for different markets]. As a benefit, this headphone is built far better than any other headphone near it's price range, and much better than most that cost vastly more.

My personal recommendation, depending on your needs, would be to go with one of the larger open Sennheisers (485 would be one model). A few dollars more, but some definite advantages over the 280s.

I have a pair of 280s that I got for use on planes and stuff where it's noisy, and that's about all I can use them for. Because they're sealed, you lose a bit of bass response, but the worst thing to me about the design is cord noise. Unless you're sitting perfectly still, anything touching the cord goes straight to your ear. And isn't the reason you want a good sealed phone to block out other noises and give good music? They could have put some sort of vibration-reducing coupling in the cord or something...

I also have a pair of HD600s which are worlds better in terms of comfort, bass reproduction, and because they're open no cord noise. Wonderful headphones, a bit more than you're looking for, but some similar ones are available in the ~$100 range. Can't speak about the other brands though.

Beyer dt-990 hands down! I have nice hometheater (Q Acoustics 2000i series with BK`s sub), but since i bought these headphones i have watched almost every movie thru them. They are very comfortable, i wear them many hours every day. I also have Sennheiser HD-598, very nice also - more neutral to me, but these beyers rock! Punchier bass and more dynamic, they are very nice with movies. I use them thru Harman Kardon AVR-255 with Dolby Headphone mode on. It really makes difference. At headfi forum people praise these cans, price is same with 880. Maybe if you listen some classical or something light, then maybe you can find Sennheiser 600/650 better. Movie wise i would stick to Beyers..

You don`t need to think room acoustics with headphones. You don`t need to think neighbours with headphones, crank that volume and enjoy! With Dolby Headphone mode it makes wider soundstage surround like so it really feels you are in the movie. People don`t realisize how good more expensive cans can sound.

If you are thinking HD800 you have to listen Beyerdynamic T1, many think they are better than HD800. They are also cheaper than Senns in Europe that is.

I'm on board for tangents! I am looking into a new headset. It is used for mostly music listening but occasionally for gaming as well, hence the attached mic. I have listened to a few different models but haven't been impressed anywhere. Maybe I am just going to have to go with a standalone mic, they are only a couple bucks and I don't care how I sound :D

Budget <$200 - I don't need to spend too much, if I get excited over something I would just put it on my speakers.
Adjustable - I have a big head!
Durable - I am starting to think that it is a game toddlers instinctively know, 'Hey look a wire is hanging down off the desk, I should rip on it and smash what's attached to it on the floor!'.....

P.S. I'm in Canada
