I just bought a Yamaha HTR5760 receiver from BestBuy in Canada. Though the receiver price is CDN $649, it was on sale for a week and I could buy it for CDN $499. Though I think that I got a good deal, I am not too sure how bestbuy does this. I've been to other stores and inquired about other receivers (ONKYO, Yamaha RXV series etc.), and nobody's able to offer a rebate of more than $50. Make me wonder if the liberal return policy of the big stores means that the sell used items on sale (as new products). Any experiences/comments will be helpful? The reason I ask is that if I am investing money into a good receiver, I want to make sure that I get a factory fresh product and not a used product.

Best Buy does sell "Open Box" and floor models from time to time. But, they are always labeled as such and mark significantly down.

Best buy also runs some pretty good sales on random items from time to time. They marked down a digital camera from $499.00 to $299.00 for one weekend a couple of years ago so I bought it. The next day, the price was $499.00 again.

I doubt you got a used receiver. If the box was sealed when you bought it, I would not worry about it.

I personally saw Best Buy run an ad for a 50 inch plasma for $3999.00 several months ago which is a phenomenal price on a 1366x768 display. Bottom line is they were discontinuing that product in their stores and wanted them OUT. When I worked for a local A/V company, they would regularly lower prices to below cost just to get the last 5 or 10 out the door. Yes, they take a loss, but it gets money in and old stock out the door that may otherwise just sit there forever.

I actually ended up getting that 50" plasma on eBay... FROM BEST BUY (yes, same one) - for $3200.00 and I picked it up myself at the warehouse. They rolled it out, brand new in the box to me.

Absolutely - when Best Buy gives you a good deal, go for it!

Not anymore

That sale was only for a week. Its over now. However, futureshop and bestbuy keep having these sales. Keep checking their weekly flyer, and I am sure you'll find something in the next 2-3 weeks.
