I am in the market for a new DVD player. I know that there are these new ones that say they are HI DEF but they really are just 480i signal upconverted to 720p or 1080i. But i was wondering if there is a noticable differance from 480p. Also does anyone know of any "cheap" name brand HI DEF DVD players (no more than $150)? Thanks for your help.

Well, except for a few (useless/DRM-crippled) high-definition WMV-HD discs out there, you can't buy many high definition discs. The only way to experience HD movies is to either catch them on an HD movie channel (where they upscale it for you), or upscale it yourself with your DVD player or TV.

If you want to watch native HD content, you'll have to wait until the new Blue-Ray Discs or HD-DVD's come out at the end of the year.

Oppo Digital

The Oppo Digital is the best rated DVD player by secreats of home theater. It costs $200, but that includes a DVI or HDMI cable so it might be OK for your budget.

I agree with jcPanny's suggestion of the Oppo Digital player.

I've been using this DVD player for the past two months using DVI at 1080i, and I must say that even older movies or bad transfers seem to really look great on this player.

So for $199 you get a great DVD player AND a 3' DVI cable. :)

OOPS scratch the NeuNeo HVD-2081. They have just come out with a board revision and now have the 2085....
