Going on the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life!

Hey everyone. Like the title says, I'm going on the Relay! It's a pretty nutty event: an overnight (nine pm to nine am!), non-competitive relay where people walk, run, stroll, prance, amble, shuffle (whatever they want, really!) around a designated track -- last year it was a high school race track. It's done to raise money to support the work of the Canadian Cancer Society, to celebrate cancer survivors and to pay tribute to those we've lost.

My girlfriend is a recent cancer survivor, and events like this have become very important to us. This will be our second time doing the relay. And with Gene's permission, I'm here to ask for pledges. It can be any amount you want, paid by credit card on the CCS's secure website, with a receipt either e-mailed or snail-mailed to you. The following link will take you to my personal page where you can pledge me: https://secureccs.ca/?inv=4729b0c2-3578-46bf-9ede-daf51548c9ec

The link itself looks kinda fishy, I know, but I tested it, by clicking it and pledging myself. It works, rest assured.

Thanks for any help you're willing to give; it is MUCH appreciated.

cheers,
supervij

PS: To my friends outside of Canada, the amount you pledge will be in Canadian dollars. When you get your statement, it'll show the conversion from whatever currency you use.

We've participated in the Relay For Life here in Oregon for years. It's a very important event to raise money, most of which goes to cancer research. Cancer touches every family. I've survived two kinds of cancer, myself. Please help stamp it out in your lifetime!

I don't know about the Canadian website, but for the U.S. forum members who wish to participate or contribute locally, the American Cancer website tells all about the event. It IS a tax deductible contribution. See http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp I'm afraid I don't know if it's deductible if a donation is made to a Canadian event. But whichever, please listen to Supervij and help out. You just could be helping yourself, ultimately.

Good luck in your event, Supervij! (And happy walking...it's for such a great cause!) Our little community of 6,000 raises over $20,000 every year!

Aw man. I totally didn't think of that. Of course, it's human nature to want to help out with charities that are local -- I do this myself. Oh well. I know there are some Canadians on here too. But I believe tax receipts are available for anyone who pledges $20 CND or more (not 100% sure on this one).

The relay for life is pretty nutty, eh, rjbudz? I remember marvelling at the local bands that offered to play for free, just to keep us awake and going throughout the night. Not to mention all the food companies (Tim Horton's, Wendy's) who offered free food! They even organized a volleyball tournament for people who need a break (we lost, by the way . . . big time), and a karaoke tent, where I almost worked up the nerve to sing Oasis' "Wonderwall" for my gal. The last few hours are a blur, though. After being awake for such a huge stretch, I could barely stand and the halucinations had begun in earnest!

But it was also a very moving event, as we stopped at one point to honour the memories of those we've lost. I can't even begin to describe the emotions going on -- very touching. And when surrounded by so many people who are all in this together, the communal feeling is pretty amazing.

I'm happy to hear you pulled through TWICE, rjbudz! It takes a lot of strength, will and courage to do what you've done. Seeing my gal go through it was heart-breaking, but I felt all the more proud when I saw the way she refused to give up, the way she kicked that cancer in its *ss and sent it packing.

Anyway, sorry to ramble. But like I said, this stuff has become important to us. And I'm happy to receive any more pledges!

Many here on AH will eventually be praying for cures. Cancer kills >25% of the population of North America, and affects many, many more. (Think of it as helping yourselves, folks.)

I hope you get lots of donations, Supervij!!

I hope so too; thanks, rjbudz! :)

Maybe people are donating locally, as you suggested. That's a great thing too, so no worries.
