Glory is one of those movies that always chokes me up a little. Partly because it is a great movie with some dramatic scenes but mostly because it is a movie based on real events and people who overcame many hurdles and obstacles. It is the story of the all volunteer Massachusetts 54th regiment, the first black regiment to fight in the Civil War. This was a diverse group made up of runaway slaves & free men, some highly educated & others with no education, a few from wealthy families, most had little. But they had something in common, they all wanted to fight for their country.

The movie, which won 3 Oscars in 1989, takes us from the formation of the regiment and their training, some of the many obstacles they had to face just to be taken seriously and allowed to fight, through them leading the charge on Fort Wagner.

I was a little dissapointed with the picture on this one. I had seen 4.5 star reviews for the pq and while it does have many strong points, such as fine detail, I found it to be rather grainy at times with somewhat of a muted out coloring. I have seen this in DVD and it is a huge improvement IMO but I would have given it around 3.5 stars for picture.

The audio I found to be quite good, especially for a movie that is 20 years old. Surrounds seemed to be in constant usage with very subtle sounds effects for the quiet scenes and much stronger effects for the battle scences with bullets and cannonballs and explosions all around. I felt it could use a bit more LFE, but what was there was still impressive.

Overall it's a movie I'd highly recommend for anyone to see and I feel it makes a fine addition to my collection.

IMO, at least today, all we can ask is that they give us the closest reproduction of the master. It seems that color timing/palette/saturation is as often a choice of the filmmaker as it is of the people doing the transfer, but what does this neophyte know. I personally like film grain.

Here are some comparison pix to look over.

Thanks for the mini-review. I look forward to watching this at some point, most likely as rental.

Definately worth upgrading to BD, IMO. I picked it up from Amazon for $9.99 last week, down from $12.99 for a few months before (it's up at $17.99 now). Seems like their are good deals to be found for those who are patient.
