Well, I finally got my DVD's back from my brother after several months. I even bought a new Gladiator DVD, but it was only in DD. There is no comparison. None. The wife took the kids to the pool, so I thought I really test out the system with these two flicks. The beginning of Gladiator almost brought tears to my eyes, hearing those flaming arrows shoot over my head. The trebuchets catapulting those mammoth stones rocked the house. I had the volume on the Denon set at -9! All the speakers were set to small, and the crossover set to 80Hz on the receiver. The sub's crossover was set to 120Hz. Good Lord. 4pm in the afternoon, and I get a knock on the door. "Everything all right in there?" I had to invite Joe in and show him what I've been doing. He couldn't believe it. I reran the beginning 3x for him as we put down 6 Heinys. We are going shopping next weekend to get him a system. He wants to keep it under $2500 if at all possible. I think I can manage

Next, I put in Pearl Harbor. (Joe had to leave, unfortunately) I've only seen it at the theater. The audio is so so in the beginning-nothing exciting. Just wait until the Japanese fly in over the island. I about sh!t my pants. Those torpedoes hitting the ships are amazing. What great sound engineering to get it right on that flick. The planes flying overhead sounded so real. It made a huge case for 7.1 over 5.1. You just don't get the circle effect with 5.1. I've always used U571 to show off my setup. I've got a new movie to do it now. Big thumbs up for P.H.

One of my favorite demo discs is Toy Story 2. The begining of the movie when the dinosaur is playing the Buzz game there is some monster bass. The THX Tex demo before the movie starts is also pretty sweet. Not to mention video doesn't get much better than this either.

Gladiator with the DTS soundtrack is much better than with just DD. I love this movie for showing off my system, and what the heck, I just plain love that movie. Maximus could beat me silly with a telephone and I wouldn't complain a lick. As for PH it suffers from the same problem as the Haunting. I couldn't stomach watching the whole movie again, and how do I justify spending any $ at all on movies I never intend to watch fully? Pearl Harbor sucks IMO. Maybe if they bring out the Japanese raid scene on a demo disc I could understand it, but to sit through 3 hrs of schlock and revisionist history for 5 or 6 minutes of good sound, well ok, maybe. But it's a weak and half-hearted maybe. Anytime I want to watch a good 3hr movie that is based around the same occurences I watch Tora Tora Tora. Yeah it doesn't make it to the part where the US gets some payback, but it is a fantastic movie.

The Gladiator DTS disc is amazing I agree the sound at the beginning is great, but I like when they are in the coluseum and you can here the crowd all around you. Not to mention the movie is great by itself so who needs the DTS......ok well yeah I do, but still....

I use this same DVD to demo my system as well. Lots of good audio/surround right from the very start and the video is top notch as well.

I was really disappointed that they didn't retain the DTS track for the EE of Gladiator, and IMO, what was added wasn't worth losing the DTS.

Pearl Harbor - so-so, but great sound during the attack.

There is NO BETTER --- and I emphasize this --- version of GLADIATOR than the now out of print SIGNATURE SELECTION with the DTS ES track (two-disc), which is still one of the most aggressive home theater mixes on the planet; it was the very first title I purchased after getting into this hobby (and since that time it has become, amongst cliques I travel in, the "home theater christening disc," meaning it MUST be the first title purchased, in "our" eyes, when setting up a surround system, and the first title played through the system), and it absolutely outshines all the versions that have subsequently been released: forget that overpriced three-disc "Extended Cut" that recently came out: much like "Black Hawk Down," the Dolby Digital sound mix cannot hold a candle to the DTS track on these titles, and the extras are not worth buying over the sound quality of the DTS tracks. GLADIATOR becomes a totally different experience in DTS ES over the Dolby variant; and so does Black Hawk Down in Superbit with the DTS mix. The SIGNATURE SELECTION of Gladiator should be hunted down online, now that its out of print, because it is simply better -- in all ways -- than the other incarnations of this title in Dolby sound, indeed. The roar of the crowd (as mentioned), the intense whistle of the arrows and weapons as they're being thrown, the reality of the environment created by this DTS ES mix -- everything is larger than life on the Signature Selection version. I still use it as demo material.

As for PEARL HARBOR, I own the two disc Commemorative Edition, which includes that DTS track, but I was never wowed by it to be honest....the film SUCKS, up until that attack sequence, with that ridiculous love triangle ****ing thing, and could have been edited out easily, but when the audio heats up during that attack scene, the DTS audio really doesnt floor me....even cranked way up. To me, there's a bit of a lack of surround activity even when the planes fly in and rip the bullets into the back channels; something seems to be "missing" here, like there could have been some more detailed work done.

I hate Ben Affleck. but when I ran out of movies to watch. I bought Pearl Harbor with DTS.

holy crap! holy crap! I am so wowed by the sound effects of the japanese attack, and the fact that it was a very long scene! (I only watched up to that point, but oh wow)

I can't ask for more ... perfect bass! each explosion, each machine gun fire was separated from each other, I was having the couch shaking action AND gunfire bass!

Ben Affleck getting screwed over with his girl - ***** 5 stars
Long attack scene ***** 5 stars
Kate Beckinsale **** 4 stars

OK- I stopped reading in the middle of all this and went to Amazon and ordered a used Gladiator Signature edition for about 6 bucks! Already have the Pearl in the collection.

Well, last week I had a brand new experience with Peral Harbor & Master and Commander tracks, as I went to a friends house to help him out setting up his new baby (he moved from a Pio 1015 to a Denon 4306), so guess what?

Holy Cow, to say the least!! That Jap strike is simply outstanding, but IMO Master and Commander is far better. It hapeened something quite similar to what Buckeyefan described regarding to the neighborhood...

The 4306 was at ref. level ( 0dB, on a 21 x 12' room) during some battle scenes & explosions, so after a while the bell was ringing at the door and some of his neighbors just came in to see if everything was ok (as they heard several explosions, though).
Really amazing ( + the fact that boozing was free...).
