I'm interested in these new additions to the GIK line up. I'm just wondering if they can be covered with a fabric like Guilford of Maine or is painting them the only way to go. Any opinions on this?

Pssst. Don't let Jason (the designer of the D1's) know you're thinking of covering with cloth. He'll have a cow!

Seriously, cloth in front of any diffusor is not a good idea. No matter how transparent the cloth, there is some filtering and some reflection that goes on that will muck up (technical term) the balanced diffusive pattern.

While the subject is at hand, how does one determine the need for a diffuser?
I don't think the "buy all you can afford" theory that is all too prevalent with absorbers, is the answer with these things, right ?

Correct. Diffusion can be used for a variety of things from increasing the spaciousness of the sound (especially in the rear of the room) to minimizing slap from untreated areas of the room (usually up high or on the rear half of the side walls), to placement behind dipole/bipole speakers to minimize comb filtering without killing 50% of the speaker's output.

Every room is different and should be addressed accordingly. There isn't really a rule of thumb.
