Getting the most from my new setup

So here is a few pics of the new goods. I just got the ascend audio speakers which are awesome and they are being powered by an onkyo tx-nr708. I was just hoping someone could explain how I might be able to get the most out of this gear. I dont know which listening modes I should be in or if there is any other ways to get more power or "movement" out of them. I was watching black hawk down today and felt like explosions should have been more intense and maybe just a more "being there" feeling. any help would be great.

The center is awfully high up, would it be possible to bring it down just under the tv? You would get a better localized sound from it.

For more "impact", you need sub (or subs!) my friend.

I picked up that same model Onkyo from Best Buy as a closeout to re-sell, but before I sold it, I tried it out in my theater, just to get a feel for it. I just ran a quick set-up with the Audyssey mic and let it run DTS HD-Master from the bluray. Sounded good, even compared to my Elite.

What/how many surrounds are you using? Have you run the Audyssey setup? It makes a big difference. And as my Colorado brother mentioned, you need a good sub if you don't already have one. Looks like you may need to toe the speakers in a bit toward the listening position. It's hard to tell with the pics 90 degrees out of phase.

I like that you used "degrees out of phase" when referring to a photo......you spend too much time on the boards!!!

Using the Audessey set up will let the system try to fix the situation in the case where your seating position is in a spot where standing waves nullify leaving you with squat for bass (a good start).

An optimally placed sub could fix this (best case).

Elstwise you could crank the bass freehand, but that would probably leave you with an inaccurate presentation (worst case)..

Though I suppose I could look up the owners manual online, do you know if the receiver allows you to manually tweak bass response below 100hz after you use the Audessy?

I have been thinking about getting an Onkyo 808 or 809 myself.

Onkyo NR-708 weights almost 30lbs - not sure If putting it on top shelf is best idea...
