My wife was looking around online to find out about my used CD purchases, one of which was the Clarke/Duke Project, and she came across this Youtube video of George Duke singing Sweet Baby live. I like it and just thought I'd pass it along.

He and Stanley Clarke originally did this song about 25 years ago, so I'm willing to forgive him the ocassional crack in his singing. Like the rest of us, he ain't getting any younger.

This was one of my favorite songs back in the day and as soon as I replaced this disc and put this song on, it become one of my favorites all over again.

A bit of George Duke trivia,George used to be afraid to sing,he thought his voice was horrible,i watched an interview where he was talking about his time with The Mothers Of Invention where he said he fought Frank tooth & nail about singing,Frank & George finally agreed that at key points in songs all George had to do was to sing one word,then later on Frank convinced him to sing short back ground vocal tracks,before George knew it he was singing entire shows.

Durring this period George also learned to play the synthisizer & fell in love with it.

I mentioned in another post that I was going to rebuild my jazz collection, but didn't mention why it needed to be replaced. Back around '93, my wife issued an ultimatum regarding my album collection. She got tired or storing and transporting my eight crates of albums from house to house to house. So I sold the whole collection to appease her, duly noting that one day she would regret that decision as I did at the time. Now she regrets the decision and has no issues rebuilding a bigger and better collection on CD.

The Clarke/Duke project was one of the first albums I replaced and was the first one I opened to listen to in the car on the way home. I will take HiFi's advice and get more George Clarke. Any suggestions as to which albums are the prime choices from his catalog?

The George Duke band is my favorite Duke band right behind the years he spent recording with Zappa & The Mothers of Invention,if you like fusion jazz mixed with heavy funk this era of the George Duke band is the ticket,you cant go wrong with any album from this band.

Some of the fusion ensembles are pretty "out there". I think I'll stick to the lighter side of the jazz spectrum. George Duke's After Hours CD seems to be about my speed.
