i have a genesis g-6030 home theatre the volume control for the surround L/R ,centre and subwoofer will not go above 00db but will go down to -10db ,any idea,s what up

I Need Help, Please Help.
I received this unit as a gift, plugged it in and I am only getting a "humming" noise that increases in pitch and volume. The only thing that will stop the noise is by turning the master switch off, or unplugging it. Very Frustrating. Can anyone tell me what is wrong?
