Future proofing

I had a look at the new Pioneer 50" plaz. It looks great, but I'm wondering if it's smarter to hang on for the Elite 1080p in September. Would one be wise to spend the extra cashish on a 1080p monitor in an attempt to keep up with future technology?

With a screen that size 1080p probably isn't that important unless you are going to sit extremely close to the set otherwise 720p/1080p will look exactly the same. About waiting for the new lines thats your choice. You won't be future proofed though, this technology is constantly changing you can just do the best you can for now, but current displays will last a while and do a good job at it if you pick up a quality display like Pioneer.

I have to agree with Avaserfi; with 50" there is no need to spend the extra money for 1080p

Really? I was led to believe 50" was a monitor of considerable size. I'm assuming then, that if you're going the REAL big route ie. 60" or larger via projector and screen, you should invest in a 1080p resolution?

50'' used to seem big but you are dealing with guys here that use 100-120 inch screens for their PGs.

I did buy a 1080p set after trying the same tv in the 720p version. I see the difference... and it's quite a bit! ... on a 46in. by the way! My advice: try 'em both.

p.s. I sit approx at 7-8ft of my display.

The difference you see is probably not related to the screens resolution but more likely related to the internal processors of your newer, larger TV.

Anyone who is in the market for an HDTV should read this article to understand if they need 1080p. It will clearly explain why or why not you need such a high resolution and if it is worth the money in your case.

50" is probably one of the sizes that can go either way depending on the source and TV's internal processing. Make sure to check out the TV's you want to buy and make sure you are happy with it first.

Along with Ava, I am not sold on 1080p unless it's for the huge screans. I have to say I have a several years bargain buy epson powerlight and the pictur is amazing when the right source is going to it. I am not even sure what the resolution is anymore. I lost the manual as frankly I don't care. It's an 80" widescrean display, and honestly, the only thing that can top the PQ is a few rare well set up plasmas.

I am the first to say I don't like plasma tech, but done right they can be incredable.... but again unless you are basicaly sitting right on top of it, the PQ isn't quite an issue.

Pluss the master cheif looks plenty cool in whatever resolution I have going, and I haven't seen ANYONE in person show better picture quality while playing games. Movies... and HD discovery... well I'm not HDMI equiped and not ready to be either.. and unless I up my projector pre/pro and go blueray/HDDVD.. I won't ever care.
