Full Dynamic Range - what is it?

Hi.

I see that Chromecast has an option to play in FDR.

However I don't know whether my speakers are considered FDR. How can I find out?

Without looking at the manual I'd say that's as opposed to a compressed or limited dynamic range....sounds like FDR would be the preferable setting no matter what the speakers but I'd check the manual....and a quick google seems to back that up https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/6290498?hl=en

To me it would indicate that chromecast has the capability to further compress the audio band and limit the dynamic range of the original recording that they are passing on to the customer.

Speakers are independent of FDR.

Well, the google help page does say this: "Note: Many common speaker systems such as desktop computer speakers, docking speakers, portable and Bluetooth speakers are not built to support such a full dynamic range, causing the volume level to be very loud and sound to be somewhat distorted. Please avoid turning this setting on in those cases."

I guess then those speakers cannot handle very loud audio signals so one would turn down the speakers to a level it can support the loudest signal.
It would seem to me the dynamic range would still be there but the lowest levels would be too quiet to hear.
Perhaps they should talk about spl capability then, not dynamic range?
