I really don't want to do this but finances dictate otherwise -
I have used this receiver in my living room to power an all Klipsch 5 channel system and a zone 2 system in my basement. You can use the on-board amps for zone 2 but I use an external 100 watt amp. One nice feature about this receiver is that you don't have to turn the receiver on to power zone 2 that way.

This is a nice unit with exceptional warm sound - no problems powering a home theater system - I believe that whoever gets this receiver will be more than happy with it. Make me a real offer.

Ron, I know this is an old thread, but do you remember what the bass was like on the 8300 ? Phil.

Marantz 8300

I always used an SVS sub so I had plenty of bass.

Not sure I understand the question? I still use my 8300 and bass is very good with it. I also have a rather large sub though...but the quality of bass output from the receiver isn't an issue.

Thankyou for the replies.
I had a 5300 and it had very good bottom end and also had multi ch stereo with sub. I then upgraded to a 7300ose, lovely unit, more clear but it didn't have the sub in multi stereo also found the bass was a little lighter than the 5300. I am about to get an 8300 which from the downloaded manual has the multi ch stereo with sub again, so I was wondering how the bottom end of this unit is going to sound compared to the others.
Going to run the unit into Yamaha 6 ohm speakers -
NS-500M fronts, NS-100X rears, NS-C150 centre, and have duel Sony SA-WM40 12 inch subs.
What do you think ?
Philip.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but I have the opportunity to buy a Marantz SR- 8300 AVR in excellent condition. My question is it safe to hook this receiver up to a pair of speakers with a 4 Ohm nominal load? The speakers are a pair of Canton CT-800's TIA, Mike

Found the specs here:
https://www.libble.eu/marantz-sr-8300/online-manual-6001/?page=0055
The manual has a power rating for 8 ohms and 6 ohms. To make an accurate assessment one would need to see the impedance curve for the CT-800 but all I could find was the frequency response curve. If the impedance curve went down to 2 ohms you might have concern, but if the impedance is more around 6 ohms and dips to 4 ohms in one spot, then the Marantz should handle them ok. It's a pretty solid receiver. Quite often the dip in impedance occurs at the lower frequencies, so if you are also using a subwoofer with bass management, then it is less of a concern unless there is a real drop in impedance above 120 Hz, but can't say for certain without the measurements. I read over some other forum posts about the CT-800 and none of them mention the speaker needing an amp that handles very low impedance loads, so I suspect that the SR-8300 will handle them just fine.

I had this one with five 4 Ohm speakers in a very large room and it wasn't happy with all of them playing at high SPL. With just two of them, it should be fine though. I used it with one pair in a second system for a few years with no issues. The power supply was pretty stout. Had it not been stolen, I probably would still be using it in a second system.

Thanks for your response guys. So I have another question.

What are your thoughts between running the following 2 Receivers: Marantz SR- 8300 AVR or a
Denon AVR 4802 R? I will be running this 2 channels only (W/the Canton's). This system will be in my great room up stairs connected to the TV and A DVD player for movies. I realize the Denon supplies more power but I believe I have the same issue with regard to the 4 Ohm nominal load for the speakers. Thanks Again! Mike

Found the Denon manual on Crutchfield.
The Denon is rated 6 to 16 Ohms, but they supply power ratings for 8, 4 and 2 ohms implying that the AVR can handle 2 ohm peaks. I would not foresee any issues using the Cantons in a 2 speaker setup.

If you're still concerned, you could ask around on the AudioScienceReview forums and see if any members have experience with 4 ohm Cantons. A lot of 8 ohm rated speakers dip down to 4 ohms at the lower band so it may be that Canton is just more honest in the ratings. It's speakers that dip down to 2 ohms that can be an issue.

Bear in mind, the Denon also has pre-amp outs. If the speaker impedance becomes an issue, you could add an external amp for under $500 that's designed for low impedance speakers. It's an added expense, but the option is there. If you're looking in the used market you might even find something under $300 but I think either of those AVRs will be ok in a 2 speaker setup unless you like concert level volume on a regular basis.
