So since I've learned from all of you that I should replace my BOSE system, especially since I'm planning on upgrading my AV unit. I was wondering if you can over power your rear speakers with too big of front set up?

Example; you have Avalon Acoustics fronts, and then what would be the "size" proportion for your rears or does it matter?

Room Size; 16' x 16' vaulted ceiling to 20' at peak. Also open behind rear speaker area. The kitchen, dining and family are just one big room. The measurements above are for the family room area only though.

thanks,

The surround speakers are less critical than the front three but it won't matter if they use smaller drivers or have a lower sensitivity than the fronts because you calibrate out that difference when you set the levels for each channel in the receiver.

I'd try to avoid a gross mismatch like highly sensitive front speakers (say 93 dB) and inefficient surrounds (like 83 dB) only because it will be hard to get the levels balanced due to the limited range of the channel trims of a receiver (typically +/-12 dB).
