With speakers that short, you really need stands that put the tweeter at ear level. There's a number of reasons, but the biggest one is the high frequencies will be unnaturally diminished compared to the rest of the sound. You can also get crossover effects that cause a suckout in the midrange.
If stands really aren't an option, you should put something under the speakers just to protect the floor. Radio Shack sells some rubber feet for pretty cheap that work well.
