Front L/R and Center speaker recommendations

hey guys, I've been reading posts, reviews, and watching videos for a few days now. I've had to tear down my theater system due to needing to move into an apartment. I'll finally be getting into my house next month so now I need to think about setting it back up!

a couple years ago I got a Sony A1E TV and the Denon X3400 receiver. I didnt buy speakers... planned on doing that later.. instead used 5.1 Onkyo speakers that came from a kit. SKF-640F speakers. I was impressed with the sound coming from them, so would likely be blown away buy pretty much anything LOL. I'm not at all an audio guy so a lot of the reviews I read were Greek.

well, now its later. I'd like to start with a pair of towers and a center. I could swing $1000 max, but less is always better. :)

Ive been thinking of the Reference 263's that are on sale at Harman. They don't have the RC263 but they do have the RC252 for $180. Would that be a good setup? is it really worth the extra double cost to go up to the SVS Primes? looks like the Studio 590 JBL's are onsale for $500 each. would that be better?

Help spend my money! :D

$1000 isn't much at all. But if that's your max, I would try the SVS speakers. JBL's are well loved on here so you won't get any complaints going that route. You could check out some bookshelf speakers as well if towers are getting too expensive. Keep you budget open for a sub as well. You'll need one.

I planned on using my existing sub for now that came with the Onkyo speakers. should be good enough for now.

am I getting that much more to my untrained ears by going $1500-$2000?

I think the 590s for $1k/pr delivered is a good deal (yes I own some). The "sub" that came with an HTIB set....meh.

I can guarantee that if you purchased an SVS PB2000 sub it would blow away that sub that came with the Onkyo speakers. Well worth the investment. The JBL speakers or SVS speakers would blow those Onkyo speakers out of the water. Spending around $1500-$2000, yes you will definitely hear a difference to what you previously had.

so for $2000, I get the SVS Prime towers, center, and PB2000 sub. That would be the better setup and get more out of the X3400?

am I ridiculous thinking I can use the Onkyo's for the surounds?

The old Onkyo speakers as surrounds would probably be fine (and I'd use the L/R ones). Great thing with SVS is if you aren't happy they're easily returned.....

Thanks! best to purchase direct from SVS or from Amazon? the SVS Prime in your opinion is better than the 590's? with the JBL sale right now, I could get the 590's a 520c and the PB2000 for $1900.

^ Great System. But if your willing to spend $2000

Use this Sub for now and Up-Grade later

Id put the Money into the Mains before the Sub. Yes the Sub is important and adds to your HT experience but your main L/C/R are more important

I would buy from SVS website or JBL website.

the JBL are horn loaded speakers vs SVS with the dome tweeter. It's going to sound different. Each has their pro/cons. But both will sound great.
