Front Firing Sub in cabinet in entertainment wall - will it work?

I'm custom building my wall / cabinets where my home theater will be mounted. My goal is to have every speaker hidden. I am building openings in the wall to hold my front 3 speakers. I want to have the sub in one of the base cabinets firing out through audio fabric. Can this be done? Have others done this? What are the risks? What do I need to do get this to sound good. Looking to spend under $500 on the sub. Room is 12' by 20', cabinets & components are on one of the 11' walls. Nothing is purchased yet...

If the sub is going in the cabinet, all its driver(s) and port(s) have to face forward.

Also, make sure you put the subwoofer in a cabinet that is also a good subwoofer location. A subwoofer in a cabinet in the middle of the front wall is not such a good idea.

So one of the front corners would work OK. In a 12' wall, how close to the outside wall would it need to be - within 2'? I am looking at a front firing with port in the front as well.

Speaker locations

Keep in mind that placing a sub or any speaker in a cabinet will effect its performance. To give you a little more placement flexibility, also consider a sealed subwoofer design.
There are also several manufacturers of on-wall and in-wall speakers that would allow the speakers to be "hidden" without the need for a huge cabinet. The grills can be painted the same color as the wall. In wall or in-celing speakers might also be desirable for your surround channels.
