Friendly Reminder!!!

I just wanted to post this simple experience of mine. Its a VERY important part of setting up multiple subwoofers & also VERY important to blending a sub with your speakers.

PHASE...

Invaluble info for the newbie & a great reminder for the experienced!!

I've had my 2 HSU subwoofers for about 6 weeks now. I set them up, let them break-in, recalibrated & have been absolutely loving them ever since. My work has been busy & i've been working some really late days. Hence, i havent been able to really set down to tweak & squeeze every drop out of these new subs. (vtf-15h & mbm-12)

Well i decided that id grab my SPL meter & check a few things since i had a few minutes while the lady was out. I popped in the demo disk i got from HSU & went through some of the HZ tones (16-80hz)...Wow what a jump in dBs i got just by flipping the phase. I gained a good 2-4dB on each of the tones, exept 63hz which was the same.

Ive done all this before & having had dual 10"s before & then dual 12"s after that, i understand the importance of the phase being correct. Its a very elementary part of a basic setup. But since i hadnt checked the phase yet on these (should have been done first) it was a nice suprise.

I popped in Transporter3 & watched the Ambulance Explosion a few times back to back. A couple with each of the 2 phase settings. What i noticed was with the phase in the wrong setting, bass was a bit thin & i could i could localize the MBM-12 behind me. With the correct phase the bass was much smoother & was not localizable AT ALL. The bass just filled the room & was very articulate.

It was another simple eye opener for me & i wanted to share my experience with you guys. Hopefully the newer guys that havent checked their phase will now & i hope all you veterans enjoyed reading this little reminder!!

D@mn Gina! I thought i loved my setup before then BAM... a free improvement pops its head up! Dont you love whn that happens? :)
I wrote down what dB each was at then switched the phase on the MBM-12 & went through the tones again....

Tim,

Wonder if you could assist me a little further on the "phase" issue. I have a VTF3/MK3 and an MBM-12....and I just added an SVS PC12-NSD. Where do I start with checking the phase? Plot each sub separately and then add 1 additional sub at a time??

First you need to check to make sure the VTF-3 is in phase with your speakers. If you have a calibration disk that has some sweeps or test tones you play them at & around the crossover point. Hav an SPL meter at your seating position. Try each of the phase settings & see which one gives you more output. (have the other 2 subs off at this point)

Oncd you have that sub at the correct phase turn on the SVS. Use the disk HSU gave you & go through tracks 9-16. With spl meter still at your seat ear level, again check the different phase settings on the SVS. See which one gives you more output.

Repeat with the MBM-12.

Dont have the internal crossovers being used for any of the phase testing. If you are going to have the MBM handle the crossover point down to 50hz only then you want to engage the other 2 subs crossover & set them between 45hz & 55hz. This will allow the VTF3 & SVS to only handle 50hz & below. Giving their amps more juice since they wont be doing what the MBM is doing. But wait until after the phase is set to engage their internal crossovers.

I hope this makes sense to you! :)

yep ! I did it yesterday,

i put in the test tone cd,

and bam ! got more right away,

I used 20,40,60, & 100 hz tones,and you're right,the 60 did'nt do much,but the other 3 gave me very noticeable differences.

I hadn't checked the phase since before I got the second sub 12

Sweet!!! Now they are working together & not against eachother!

Nobody wants their subs fighting....
