Friend Loves my 12" Rythmik. Wants similar under $600. Thoughts???

Hi guys,

So a friend of my always compliments how great my Rythmik 12" Sub is performing in movies and music. He currently has a Yamaha sub that he bought for around $300 5-7 years ago. His biggest complaint .... "it doesn't go low enough".

I am thinking that he can do great with

SVS PB-1000

In terms of footprint ... He is somewhat limited in sub width but OK with any depth.

Any suggestions?

Easy to put together, well under $600. I have the 15" version powered by an XLS 1500, it's a beast.

The PB1000 would be a nice upgrade from that Yamaha......I gather. The svs website states the PB1000 width @ 15" but incorporates a 10" driver. Hsu VTF 2.4 is about the same width but uses a larger 12" driver as does the Rythmik LV12R but its 16" wide. Both would likely better the smaller Svs....the downside to the latter two though...with shipping they could exceed your pals budget but only marginally....for <$600.00 those 3 sub are at the top of the list IMO.

Rythmik currently has a sale on the LV12R of 549.00 including shipping. Checked it out.

That Yamaha while ok will not go low enough the way an SVS or HSU will. Sorry I have not heard a Rythmik sub yet.

Tell your friend he should lean towards buying a sub from a sub company, not just an audio company who happens to make subs to complete the set of their other speakers*. Or if he doesn't mind a diy project, the ultimax or the HO kit from Parts Express would best anything pre-finished.

The more you know.

* Note: Hsu and SVS sell full range speakers as well, but their roots are in subwoofers.

He said, his Yamaha sub is using a paper woofer and thus even a 10inch will sound bigger and bolder than a 12" Rythmik F12 because it doesn't use paper material for woofer.

I think that's some faulty reasoning right there.

The material doesn't really matter, it's the overall design and the measured specs that count!

Paper cones have advantages! Lighter moving mass is easier to control (I think the technical term is "less overhang"). The disadvantage is that paper is not as rigid as other materials. Thus, modern paper cones are typically some composite material.

You must have a listen before passing some sweeping general judgment like that!

Let me put it this way; I've never experienced pitch changes in movie soundtracks before until I got the Rythmik. Even for a ported sub with a paper cone driver, it will put many non paper cone subs to shame.
