To make a long story short. A buddy of mine bought a $60 HDMI cable from cicuit city. Monster 1080p 60MHz.

He has a Samsung 1080p/120MHz TV

Does he need a HDMI 1080p/120MHz cable or is the Monster 1080p 60MHz OK?

He has blue ray also. I sudgested bluejeans cables or monoprice since the proces are lower. However, I am also a newbie at this. Dou you all have some cables for me to recommend?

Thanks a lot

The cable he has is fine. There are no 120hz sources so from HDTV and Blu-ray the most you will see is 1080i or 1080p/60 as the source. This is all covered and works fine under the HDMI 1.2 and 1.3 specifications which almost all decent HDMI cables meet.

The $60 was an outrageous amount to pay compared to monoprice.com cabling, but it doesn't mean the cable won't do what it was designed for.

I wouldn't say $60 is a ridiculous price for an HDMI cable. An HDMI 1.3 cable of any longer length can get expensive. Then add to that whether it is UL CL2 (or even better, CL3) rated for in-wall runs.......

Monoprice makes some nice cables, but I'm still leery of their HDMI claims.

monoprice is the best choice for short runs. it does exactly the same job as the other ones, no big difference. On 35ft. or longer, I would definitely look elsewhere though.

Monster doesn't make bad cables. In fact they are very good. The only thing is that they are overpriced.

The OP said it was a short run so I have to respectfully disagree with you here. That is crazy expensive for 1 short wire. If monoprice makes you leery these here fellas will make you feel warm and fuzzy. They also have a wide price range and they tell you all kinds of stuff about the product. Monster would never give you an education. But they sure will take your cash.

I can't speak for everyone, but I did a test in my home running a 50' HDMI cable from Monoprice into a 35' cable from Monoprice through a HDMI coupler (not extender), and was able to pass 1080i resolution without issue over 85' of HDMI cabling.

I will likely swear by those guys forever and a day.

Yeah but a lot of people use a 35-50ft run for their blue-ray players to their projector. 1080p is a must here. Did you try to pass a 1080p signal to test it at least or was it only for DTV?

It was a PS3, but only passing 1080i over the 85'. The same 50' cable I used to connect a PS3 to a BenQ W10000 projector running 1080p/24 and 1080p/60 resolutions from a PS3 to the projector.

Yep - it passed the video without issue.

I've heard other comments on the web. I think it was endgadgetHD who made a test. I guess it's a matter of circumstances.

Endgadgets may have conducted bench testing what the scope pattern looked like. Don't know if they also conducted a visual testing.
Clint and gang will do that with the cables they tested at Monster. We'll see.
