So we watched TV before bed last night and today the thing won't turn on. When you power it up it tries to come on, the fan kicks on for 2 short cycles with a humming noise that I normally don't hear and then it turns itself off.

This is the Mits 73". I don't remember the model but it's 3 years old.

We did have lightening storms last night but the electricity didn't go off and all my other gear works.

Thoughts?

i would check that fan. i would think that there is some kind of sensor that tells the computer that the fan is on. if it is not on, it would shut off the set.

i have fixed many electronics simply by replugging connections.

I think it's a fan/temp sensor issue too but I don't really know what to do about it.

Unplugging didn't do anything.

Normally this would be a great reason to go get a big plasma but since I start a new job tomorrow and I have no idea what I will be making, I can't spend any money.

Try looking for a fuse....had a set 10 years ago where it turned on briefly and assumed it would not do that without a good fuse. Turns out, apparently only the main power supply was fused. The fan and other components had some other protection....dryers have multiple fusing

We are all gong to just be guessing, but a humming noise sounds like the projector inside trying to fire up the ballasts using the transformer. The ballasts typically would turn on right away, so you wouldn't notice a humming sound. Kind of like turning on a car - it turns on quick and you don't really notice the vrmm, vrmm, vrmm, of the starter doing it's job. But when a car doesn't turn right on, you definitely notice the sound of the starter.

3 years, regular use, time for a lamp would be my first guess.

you take the back off and have a look at it. look for dust/whatever.

with the back off, you replug any and all connections "inside" the set.

as was said, this is all guessing. but its worth trying.

how do you get a job where you don't know what you will be making ? commission ?

The noise sounds like the fans cycling on and then briefly back off and then on again.

I took out the bulb cartridge assembly, vacuumed all dust, replaced, reset the TV and it does the same thing. The light never comes on at all.

Can the bulb just burn all the way out all at once?

***just-some-guy**- I am in Medical Sales so income varies, starting a new job means starting all over so it will likely take 6 months to a year before I will get back to where I was.

I've never had a DLP TV lamp go out yet (after > 6 yrs on Mitsubishi 65").

But I had a LCD SharpVision projector lamp go out after 10 yrs. When the lamp went out, it was INSTANT.

I have a friend who had to replace a DLP TV lamp after 4 yrs.

I have a friend who has to replace the lamp on her LCD TV every 2 yrs.

Since we are all just guessing, I would also place my bet on the lamp going out also.

Too bad you didn't buy the TV from Sam's Club. My brother bought a TV from Sam's Club and after 3 yrs, he took it back and returned it for a full refund.

I guess I will just order a bulb and hope for the best.

This looks like as good of a place as any to order from unless you guys have a better idea.

See if you can find the lamp directly from amazon. Here is the lamp for my 73" Mitsubishi DLP:

http://www.amazon.com/Electrified-915B403001-Replacement-Mitsubishi-Projectors/dp/B004W8ICGK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1304297080&sr=1-1

If it doesn't work, you can return it to amazon with the reason that it "doesn't work."

Did you find the model number of your TV yet?

Mine is WD-73735.

I will continue with the speculation along the lines of BMXTRIX's thoughts.

I hope it is the bulb. That hum you heard makes me think it is worse than that - I am thinking power supply/transformer/relay/controller board/etc...

Sorry - it's no fun whatever it is.

Below is the procedure for getting the fault codes. Hope this helps!

All Mitsubishi DLP Televisions have a built in Diagnostic Decoder to store the last fault in memory. This will help the Mitsubishi Technician determine what area or part defect could exsist due to your television not coming on or turning off by itself. In order to read the error code from the front panel lights, you need to know how to access this information if it is available.

Please remember not to unplug the tv from the power outlet because this will reset the error code. The television must be in the power off state or shut off state to retreive the code.

Error Code Operational Check
Note: The TV must be in ?Shut Down? and not have been switched Off, to perform the Error Code Operational
Check.
Pressing the front panel ?ACTIVITY? and ?CHANNEL DOWN v? buttons at the same time, and holding for 5 seconds,
activates the Error Code Mode. The ?TIMER LED? flashes denoting a two digit Error Code, or indicating no
problem has occurred since the last usage.
Note: The front panel buttons must be used, NOT those on the Remote Control. ? The number of flashes indicates the value of the MSD (tens digit) of the Error Code. ? The flashing then pauses for approximately 1/2 second. ? The LED then flashes indicating the value of the LSD (ones digit) of the Error Code. ? The Error Code is repeated a total of 5 times.
Example: If the Error Code is ?23?, the LED will flash two times, pause, and then flash three times, then this will repeat itself for four more times before the blinking stops. If you forget the code, you can start all over again after the LEDs have stopped blinking. Just remember you are looking for a two digit code, denoted by a pause in the middle.

Is there a list of problems linked with those error codes.

For example, what does error code "23" mean?

AcuDefTechGuy

So error code "34" means lamp failure.

Good to know.:D
