I am not opposed to paying for good software, but I thought we might start a list of good free software that is available. Any platform is fine and it does not need to be audio related. No web browsers or OS's though. Of notable exception are the first 3. ColorHCFR and Audacity are fantastic software and OpenOffice will fill the need for %99.9 of most peoples needs in an office suite.

Here is my list.

OpenOffice

Audacity

ColorHCFR

TinkerTool

DVDflick

This program will convert just about any non-DRM file into DVD format. You can also build your own custom menus after you figure out how to manipulate the templates that come pre-loaded.

I use it to make DVDs of all the quicktime movies I have of Lauren. Works great!

Good thread.

Gimp

Photoshop type program. As above, VLC is great too. It plays just about everything.

I search Gizmos Freeware whenever I need a free program.

In no particular order, here are some of the programs I have installed on my PC and use all the time.

KMPlayer is by far the most customizable player I have ever used. There are almost too many options. I used to use VLC and MediaPlayerClassic. Video quality in KMPlayer is superior to VLC or MPC and it plays every format imaginable.

MediaCoder will convert just about any video to just about any format.

IMG Burn is a great ISO burner.

Reaper, while not a free program, has an unlimited fully functional trial and is a ProTools replacement as far as I'm concerned. I have paid for a license.

FastPictureViewer is a really fast way to flip through a lot of photos.

Picturenaut is a great HDR photo tool.

Dropbox is great for sharing files with friends or just having your files accessible from anywhere.

TreeSize Free is a great tool that lets you see what is taking up space and where on your hard drive.

Foxit Reader is a replacement for Adobe reader. It is very small, very fast, and superior in just about every way, IMO.

MyDefrag is the best and most effective defrag tool available. It is simple, lightweight, and fast.

Microsoft ICE is in beta but it works wonderfully to stitch together panorama photos.

Irfanview is another image viewer but I use it mainly as a resizer and to convert file formats.

Bullzip PDF Printer creates a PDF in place of printing on paper. I use it to save receipts from online transactions. It isn't super acurrate in that the PDF does not replicate the web page exactly (formatting errors) but it works great for my purposes.

KeePass is an open source and super secure password manager. It is easy to use and and an excellent password generator.

TrueCrypt is for the super security consious. I use it on my laptop to encrypt any sensetive information I don't want a thief to have access too. It does whole drive encryption but I haven't tried it.

Winmerge is great if you have a bunch of duplicate files in different folders. It helps you merge things together and remove duplicates. It can find duplicate files by scanning the binary data which is much more acurrate than file names and it can even find duplicate photos.

SyncToy is my backup utility. It is very simple. Set up folder pairs and the program keeps them synced. For backup, I set it to "Contribute" so new files in folder A are added to folder B but deleted files from folder A are not deleted from B. This cuts down on the number of "Uh Oh" deletions.

That's all I have off the top of my head right now.

Pretty much everything I use is already listed. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and decided I no longer wanted to pay for software anymore, but don't download illegally either. I spent a bit of time searching and have replaced pretty much everything with free software besides the operating system and a program I use for homebrewing (BeerSmith).

I use Foobar for audio playback.
I also use MagicDisc to mount ISOs without burning them, when needed.
I don't think I have seen it here, but 7Zip is an awesome compression program. Far better than any pay software I have used (WinRar and WinZip).
As far as anti-virus goes, I am running AVGFree. It seems to work pretty well.

It does look like I will be buying Adobe Professional shortly, as I need its OCR feature, aside from that I am pretty happy with freeware.

Does anyone know of a quality freeware web design program? My dad needs one for some reason and I can't find my old Dreamweaver disc.

I must suggest no one ever run that software. It took up 50 percent of my cpu when it wasn't even supposed to be running. I suggest finding something else. Removing AVG was one of the best performance upgrades I've ever made.

I remind people that making software take great effort and is not easy. . Please do us the kind gesture of buying our software. I too enjoy freeware to a point, but the commercial product is commercial for a reason.

As always never pirate software. It takes a lot of effort to make good software. It takes even more effort to maintain it. Your money goes toward the maintenance costs.

freeware I've used nearly all my computing life.

It still is the best to me. Nothing like a software engine that's worked for over 12 years.

My preferred picture editor(I'm no photographer and don't even like photography)
IrFanView

My favorite emulator
ZSNES(best system ever was SNES)

Interesting, I have used AVG for a while and never had that issue. It almost never uses my CPU and barely takes up 1mb of memory when running (aside from actual scans).

I'm not sure what caused it, but I know my father-in-law had serious issues with it at work. He's an IT guy for a university. It used to run like a champ for me, but my biggest beef with every anti-virus I've ever used is the desire to run some sort of auto protect program that causes more issues than it prevents. And disabling the feature is impossible in nearly every one I've ever used.

I too have been doing well with it for about 5 years now on my first and only desktop and as some of you might have guessed I watch more porn than Speakerman39. :D

j/k ... he watches more. :p

What do you use for ant-virus protection?

Common sense. ;) I don't troll areas of the web that have them anymore.

Same here. I don't run an antivirus software at all. Common sense is what it takes. If I'm really concerned I can turn on NoScript.
