Free Amp, Need 15" Sub.

I just scored a Peavey CS400X which is stable into 4 ohms bridged at 600 watts (according to the manual).

I'm interested in building a 15" sealed sub to go with it. I'm going sealed because of box size, and build simplicity vs. ported. I know I could build a very efficient, powerful ported design (DIY sticky Kappa Perfect build) with 600 watts but there is something about a sealed 15" that just keeps drawing me into the idea, I've got to try it.

I was interested in an IB but I can't seem to convince my wife that cutting a big hole in the wall isn't that big of deal :scratchhead:

I'm considering the CSS SDX15 (269.00), or RSS390HF-15(159.80). Seems like I should have more options in the price range of those two with the SDX15 being the highest I'll spend. Soundsplinter is just out of my price range or I'd consider an RLp15 (310.00).

The room the sub will go into is 2300 cubic feet and retangular in shape 15x19x8.

I have a BFD. My mains are DIY bookshelves crossed over at 80 Hz.

I'm hoping to keep the box under 3.5 cubic feet.

Any other suggestions or comments, experiences about the mentioned drivers will be appreciated.

Thanks,

To be honest, not many subs are suited to sealed applications; the motor quickly runs out linear range as the travel is quickly used up. DIY is kind of pointless if you use an inferior driver for the specific application at hand. If you are looking for 20Hz flat response with high SPL, 600 watts is not sufficient, either, as it requires some EQ to get that flat response in a sealed system. But you will be okay at moderate SPL levels. If you insist on sealed, and want it to be an exemplary result, I would highly recommend to save up and get at least, the entry level Sound Splinter 15". This is a lower end TC Sounds driver, but still has tremendous quality and more linear excursion as compared to many other units. Also, in the future, it will be very worthwhile for you get an amp such as the Ep2500 and bridge it for 2000 clean watts, which the Sound Splinter driver will gladly accept with no problem.

You could do two of these for the about the price of the CSS. I have not modeled the sub for a sealed application yet, but it is a linear driver.

The JL Audio 15W3v2D2 would be a great option as it uses a very similar motor to the W7. Highly linear.

The Dayton RS is a good performer as is the Titanic MKIII.

Going sealed, it would help to have more power than what you have available, especially if using an Eq at some point.

Edit: Chris beat me to the punch with the wattage. :(
